4. Chessboard Peak
Son Tra Peninsula is a gem of Da Nang, blessed with beautiful natural landscapes and picturesque beaches. Particularly mystical is the Chessboard Peak on Son Tra Peninsula. Many legends revolve around the mystery of Chessboard Peak. In ancient times, a celestial being descended to Son Tra, sat on a wide rock, and enjoyed the scenic beauty. As the enchanting landscape transformed, he carved a chessboard on the rock he was sitting on, and immediately, a complete set of chess pieces appeared. While leisurely playing, Buddha Thich wandered by, witnessing the celestial being playing chess alone. Both were equally skilled, playing for days with no clear winner. The scenery of Son Tra from above added to the beauty of the chess match, serene and carefree, appreciating nature and contemplating moves.
After several days with no conclusion to the chess game, the two continued to sit there. Suddenly, from above, a few fairy maidens descended, and the fairy maidens stopped at a nearby beach, frolicking with the cool blue sea. Later, the locals named that beach with a very poetic name: 'Tien Sa' (Fairy Bay). In the midst of the tense chess match, the joyful sounds of the fairy maidens distracted Buddha Thich, making a wrong move. At that moment, the celestial being seized the opportunity to checkmate, ending the chess game. Winning, the celestial being bid farewell joyfully, called the clouds back to the sky, leaving Buddha Thich pondering, unable to find a winning move. According to the legend, locals later engraved a chessboard on an available rock, sculpted a statue of an old man contemplating the chessboard, and this is said to be Buddha Thich.
This place is likened to a fairyland, and the path to the Chessboard Peak will take you through Linh Ung Pagoda. Along this road, you can see various animals such as squirrels, foxes, and many bird species. Moreover, standing on Chessboard Peak, you can admire the panoramic view of Da Nang city.
