The entrance gate is designed in the shape of a bell, with distinct Eastern influences. Established in 1896 by royal decree from King Thanh Thai, the school was initially known as 'Phap tu Quoc hoc Duong,' focusing on teaching French as well as Vietnamese and classical Chinese. In 1956, to celebrate its 60th anniversary, it reverted to its original name of Quoc Hoc.
The school was originally built on the grounds of the Thuy Su Dinh (the imperial military training ground for naval soldiers), with the first three buildings constructed in a traditional style using bamboo and mud. By the early 20th century, the school was reconstructed with more permanent French-style architecture. Despite several renovations over the years, including new buildings, the school still preserves its historical charm.
Quoc Hoc is the alma mater of many distinguished Vietnamese leaders, including President Ho Chi Minh, President Ngo Dinh Diem, General Vo Nguyen Giap, and Party Secretaries like Tran Phu and Ha Huy Tap. At the heart of the school stands the famous quote by scholar Than Nhan Trung: “Talent is the essence of a nation,” serving as a timeless reminder to students to uphold the values of hard work and scholarship that have been central to both the school’s and the nation's history.
