The origins of Habeco (Hanoi Beer Corporation), also known as Bia Hà Nội, trace back to the Hommel Brewery, founded by a Frenchman named Hommel in 1890 with a workforce of 30 employees to serve the French colonial army. After the French withdrawal in 1954, the brewery was abandoned and in ruins. In 1957, the Vietnamese government revived the brewery, renaming it Hanoi Beer Factory, and by May 1, 1958, the first successful batch of beer was brewed, marking a historic moment in Vietnam's brewing industry. On August 15, 1958, the first Vietnamese beer, Trúc Bạch, was produced, and this date became the annual tradition for Habeco. In 1993, the brewery transformed into Bia Hà Nội, increasing its production capacity to 50 million liters per year. By 2001, it reached 100 million liters annually, and in 2003, Habeco became a state-owned enterprise. In 2007, Habeco signed a strategic partnership with Carlsberg Group. In 2008, it transitioned into a joint-stock company, and by 2010, with the completion of a 200 million liter production plant in Mê Linh, Hanoi, Habeco became one of the largest beer producers in Vietnam.
