Sparkling under the Sun: Ô Quy Hồ Pass
The Charm of Ô Quy Hồ Pass2. The Serene Đèo Cả Road
Đèo Cả, located in Hòa Xuân Nam commune, Đông Hòa district, Phú Yên province, bordering Khánh Hòa province, is one of the largest mountain passes with tunnels in the Central region. The Cả Pass tunnel runs from North to South through Khánh Hòa province. The climate around Cả Pass is cool all year round, and from here, you can access many beautiful beaches.
This pass is approximately 333 meters high and about 12 kilometers long. Previously, traversing the pass required overcoming steep slopes and treacherous stretches to reach the other side. Now, travel has become more convenient thanks to the road tunnel through the pass, with a total length of about 13.5 kilometers, making it the second-largest tunnel after the Hải Vân Pass tunnel.
The tunnel is equipped with a system of lights, ventilation fans, drainage systems, and complete signage. Travelers always feel safe when passing through the tunnel due to its sturdy reinforced steel arch structure.
In history, this place was once the border between Đại Việt and Chiêm Thành (now part of Vietnam and Cambodia). When King Lê ventured south, he had to halt at Cả Pass due to the treacherous terrain. He established a small fortress in Phú Yên called Hoa Anh. From the 15th to the 16th century, this area was a hotspot for conflicts between Đại Việt and Chiêm Thành forces.
From the late 18th to the early 19th century, this site witnessed historical battles between Nguyễn Ánh and his brothers Nhạc, Lữ, and Huệ. Cả Pass deserves its fame as a historical landmark for having witnessed many turbulent periods. In 1947, Cả Pass continued to be a battleground for clashes between French colonial forces and the Việt Minh Front. Standing atop Cả Pass, you can gaze upon a vast expanse of sky, painting a picturesque scene from the plains to the mountains, with the vast sea in the distance.

After 3 years of construction, despite facing numerous challenges due to treacherous terrain, on December 30, 2018, the pivotal transportation project, Hạ Long - Vân Đồn Expressway (Quảng Ninh), spanning nearly 60 kilometers, was officially inaugurated and put into operation. Since the opening of the Hạ Long - Vân Đồn expressway, travel time from Hanoi to Vân Đồn has been reduced to approximately 2.5 hours, compared to over 4 hours previously.
Hạ Long - Vân Đồn Expressway, stretching nearly 60 kilometers, boasts a total investment of approximately 12,000 billion Vietnamese dong. Of this, the 53.6-kilometer section from the intersection with the Hạ Long - Hải Phòng expressway in Đại Yên Ward, Hạ Long City to Cẩm Hải, Cẩm Phả City, undertaken by Biên Cương BOT Joint Stock Company, has an investment capital of 12,000 billion Vietnamese dong. The remaining section, including the largest bridge along the route – Cẩm Hải Bridge, is invested by Quảng Ninh province with 1,150 billion Vietnamese dong sourced from the state budget.

Aside from its shimmering beauty in the early mist, Hòn Giao Pass is also affectionately referred to as Omega, derived from the graph-like shape of the pass. Compared to many passes stretching from north to south, Omega is still a relatively unfamiliar name. It only gained recognition with the opening of provincial road 723 connecting Nha Trang and Dalat. This is not only a shortcut replacing the route through Phan Rang city and Ngoạn Mục Pass but also considered one of the most beautiful roads in Vietnam connecting the plateau of flowers and the dreamy coastal city.
