At the age of 12, due to turbulent times, his father sent him to Hue for education and living. At 19, he returned to Gia Dinh, continuing his academic pursuits, and three years later (1843), he excelled in the Gia Dinh examination.
In 1847, he returned to Hue to continue his historical studies, waiting for the Ky Dau 1849 examination. Before he could take the exam, he received news of his mother's death and decided to forfeit the exam to return home for mourning. On the way, overwhelmed with grief and facing the challenges of a remote journey and erratic weather, he fell seriously ill and lost his eyesight. Despite efforts from a renowned healer, his condition did not improve. During his recovery, he also learned the art of medicine from this healer.
After mourning his mother for a period, in 1851, he overcame all difficulties, established a school, provided medical treatments to the people, and engaged in poetry and literature. A talented and virtuous individual, his fame resonated throughout the provinces.
