1. Nghi Sơn Oil Refinery
The Nghi Sơn Oil Refinery is an ongoing oil refining project located at the Nghi Sơn Economic Zone in Thanh Hóa. The NSRP complex is situated 260km south of Hanoi in the Nghi Sơn area, Hải Yến commune, Nghi Sơn township, Thanh Hóa Province, one of the largest provinces in Vietnam. The total investment for the NSRP project is estimated at approximately 9 billion USD, with around 4 billion USD contributed by investors. This refinery has the capacity to process 200,000 barrels of crude oil imported from Kuwait daily (equivalent to 10 million tons annually). The primary products include high-grade diesel (2.204 kt/year), regular diesel (1.470 kt/year), RON 92, RON 95 (1.153 kt/year), LPG, aviation fuel, and various petrochemical products.
Capitalizing on the global economic opening, the Nghi Sơn Oil Refining Project was launched with the investment of four major corporations:
- Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam)
- Kuwait Petroleum Europe B.V. (KPE)
- Idemitsu Kosan Company (Japan)
- Mitsui Chemicals (Japan)
The Nghi Sơn Oil Refinery plays a key role in ensuring national energy security, particularly in oil products. This project is strategically important to the Vietnamese government as it addresses the growing demand for refined petroleum products, driven by the rapid industrialization and modernization of the country. The establishment and operation of the refinery are crucial steps toward achieving self-sufficiency in refined oil products and securing energy supplies. Furthermore, this will be the largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) project in Vietnam as of August 2014, making its successful completion a critical factor in attracting more foreign investments, especially from Japan and Kuwait.
The Nghi Sơn Oil Refining Company officially started commercial operations in November 2018, with Phase 1 capacity set at 10 million tons of crude oil annually. The Nghi Sơn complex now meets nearly 40% of the domestic fuel demand. The refinery has produced a variety of high-quality, commercially valuable petrochemical products such as A92 and A95 gasoline, diesel, benzene, pure paraxylene, polypropylene, and sulfur.

The gravity dam is 138.1m high, and the dam's crest is 961.6m long, featuring 12 deep discharge tunnels and 6 surface discharge tunnels. The open-type hydropower plant is positioned behind the dam. The total volume of earth and rock excavation is 14.673 million m³, with concrete usage of 4.92 million m³, including 2.238 million m³ of CVC concrete and 2.682 million m³ of RCC concrete. The project includes 109,400 meters of grouting and waterproofing drilling, and the total equipment weight is 72,070 tons.
Regarding the construction schedule, according to the National Assembly's resolution, the plant’s first turbine was expected to begin operation in 2012, and the entire project was to be completed by 2015. However, the Sơn La Hydropower Plant surpassed its timeline by 3 years, finishing earlier than anticipated.
By 2023, the Sơn La Hydropower Plant had achieved 100 billion kWh of electricity generation, contributing significantly to the national power grid, alongside Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) to support the country's socio-economic development. The plant is currently focusing on enhancing labor productivity, innovation, and applying advanced technology to improve the reliability, availability, and safe operation of the turbines, aligned with EVN's 2023 theme: 'Practicing thrift, preventing waste.'
