1. Packaging
Packaging of counterfeit products often lacks the sharpness of genuine ones. Printed text may appear blurry, lacking clarity, and the color of the box may differ slightly from authentic ones. When shopping, bring along a previously purchased genuine product for comparison if possible. By paying attention to the clarity of the text, layout, and color printing, you can spot fake cosmetics through their packaging. They cannot replicate it 100%. Genuine packaging will have clear, sharp text, refined layout, and subtle colors. Counterfeit ones tend to have blurry, slanted text, messy layout, and colors that are either too bold or too faded compared to genuine products. This is the most commonly used method. Do not hesitate to bring along an old cosmetic container or borrow one from a friend who owns genuine products for comparison. Additionally, referring to images from the official website is also an option.

2. Product Color
When purchasing items like setting powder, blush, eyeshadows, you'll notice that authentic products always blend multiple colors to create a final shade. For example, even if you buy an orange blush, you'll still see hints of pink, brown, or a slight shimmer to enhance the complexion. On the other hand, counterfeit products often have plain colors, resembling paint colors, with poor adhesion compared to genuine ones.
Authentic eyeshadow palettes are typically arranged following a specific gradient, from dark to light within a specific color scheme. Meanwhile, counterfeit eyeshadows are often disorganized, prone to breakage, and produce fine dust particles.
The product colors may appear darker and less vibrant due to the meticulous blending of hues found in genuine products. The quality of genuine products is also far superior. For instance, genuine foundation and blush will have a smoother texture, while compact powders are firm and do not crumble like counterfeit ones.

3. Product Packaging
Authentic MAC lipsticks feel solid in hand, with glossy packaging reflecting vibrant colors, rather than the dull plastic appearance of counterfeit ones. Similarly, for other types of lipsticks, carefully inspect the tube for clear details, smooth texture when touched, sturdy construction, and resistance to deformation. No matter how skilled the imitation, counterfeit products cannot achieve the smooth, exquisite, and flawless packaging of genuine ones.
You should also be cautious and check the expiration date of the cosmetics you intend to purchase. Many times, cosmetics nearing their expiration date (within 9 months to 1 year) are still sold as usual.

4. Brand Logo
Before deciding to purchase a product from any brand, carefully examine the brand logo to avoid buying counterfeit items. Some products may closely mimic the original, but they struggle to reproduce the brand's logo accurately. The logo may have slight alterations, additions, or reductions in size to avoid scrutiny.
The logo on authentic high-end items is printed clearly, whereas counterfeit ones often have blurry logos with minor alterations. Reputable brands typically maintain consistency in their logo placement, design, and color on their products. When making a purchase, pay attention to the logo's positioning, lines, and color on the item. Check the label inside to see if it's stamped or hand-sewn; fake items usually lack inner labels.
With counterfeit products, the logo is often asymmetrical and improperly sized. Also, inspect the external labels as many brands place these on the outside of the design.

5. Fragrance
It's crucial to emphasize that authentic cosmetics have a subtle fragrance, pleasant and not overpowering like counterfeit products. Even items like blush or eyeshadow carry a distinct scent. Moreover, renowned cosmetic brands often specify certain characteristic fragrances for their product lines, providing a reliable reference for differentiation based on prior usage.
From a sensory perspective, lipsticks, eyeshadows, and blushes should feel light on the skin, emit a gentle, pleasant scent, and offer smooth, even coverage. When applied to the skin, they exhibit a glossy, smooth finish. Conversely, counterfeit products may feel suffocating and heavy on the skin, with an intense aroma.
When purchasing items like perfumes, mascaras, or liquid lipsticks, pay attention to the scent or the texture of the product. Products with a strong, pungent odor, liquid texture, sticky consistency, or clumpiness should be avoided at all costs.

6. Water Test for Cosmetics
Conducting a water test on cosmetics is a simple method employed by many, although it's only applicable to certain products. However, the limitation of this method lies in the fact that you can only check the item after purchasing it, and the accuracy is relatively low.
How to do it: Put a small amount of foundation or moisturizer into a water glass, stir for about 20 seconds, then observe the phenomenon:
- Product Dissolves in Water: This is a sign of a product that's absolutely safe for your skin, ensuring your health won't be negatively impacted during usage.
- Product Sinks to the Bottom of the Glass: If the cosmetic sinks to the bottom of the glass, it likely contains excessive heavy metals like lead (beyond permissible levels) or mercury, commonly found in counterfeit items. These components are highly toxic to the skin and health, causing skin irritation, cancer, and damage to internal organs.
- Product Floats on the Surface of the Water: When cosmetics float on the water's surface, it indicates the presence of substances derived from mineral oil. While these products are effective at moisturizing, they can clog pores, leading to various skin issues such as acne and premature aging.
