Florida's Beautiful Hospital, located in the heart of Florida, has become an integral part of the landscape and a natural habitat for several endangered bird species. It is considered an ideal place for healing, where humans and nature coexist beautifully. The eco-friendly hospital building is designed with non-reflective glass, and after studying bird flight patterns, the structure allows birds to navigate freely along their migratory routes without obstruction. The hospital is equipped with all the modern amenities and infrastructure necessary to provide top-notch patient care.
Architect Mike Hoffmeyer (of RTKL Associates, based in Dallas), one of the key designers of Florida Hospital Waterman, stated: “We wanted to create a healthcare facility that stands apart from the traditional ones, helping patients feel as comfortable as possible.” The most striking feature of the hospital is its three-story underground parking structure, the central hospital area, and the main lobby with windows offering views of nearby oceans and surrounding gardens. Florida Hospital Waterman almost resembles a tropical resort more than a healthcare facility. The roof, designed like a hut, extends over the building, protecting from the elements while serving as an interesting architectural feature. Completed in 2003, the hospital successfully combined design principles with environmental considerations to create a truly unique facility.


2. Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies
One of Florida's leading maternity hospitals, Winnie Palmer Hospital boasts one of the largest neonatal intensive care units in the country, backed by the Arnold Palmer Medical Foundation. With its stunning glass dome architecture, Winnie Palmer Women's & Children's Hospital, located in Orlando, Florida, presents an entirely different look. In fact, it was designed to resemble a luxury resort hotel, making it easy to mistake it for a high-end vacation destination. This $100 million facility, specializing in women's and children's healthcare, was designed by global architectural firm Jonathan Bailey Associates, providing a level of service that makes patients feel like they are on a hotel holiday rather than enduring the discomforts of a hospital stay.
With its impressive exterior, the hospital’s structure is made up of towers covered in dark glass, rising from a triangular base. Architects at Jonathan Bailey Associates explained that this layout facilitates easier access to resources, improves the movement of patients and staff, and simplifies the monitoring of operations. Renovated in 2006, Winnie Palmer Hospital has received praise for its remarkable architecture, becoming one of the most exceptional hospitals in the country. It stands as a distinctive landmark on the Orlando skyline.


3. The London Clinic (London, UK)
The London Clinic is a private healthcare institution based in the heart of London. It is one of the largest private hospitals in the UK. While it maintains some consulting rooms on the traditional Harley Street, the hospital’s main building is located at the corner of Devonshire Place and Marylebone Road. The clinic was established in 1932 by a group of Harley Street doctors and is a registered charity in the UK. The new eight-story building, spanning 8,000 square meters, is a beautiful blend of modern sophistication while preserving its classic charm.
In 2006, the clinic reported a total income of £75 million, making it one of the 100 largest charities in the UK. Approximately 15% of its income comes from international patients. The hospital’s facilities include 250 beds, 17 operating theaters, and a specialized intensive care unit. Its cancer center is equipped with a cyberknife and image-guided radiation therapy. In November 2015, the clinic secured a £65 million revolving credit facility from HSBC, which was used to increase operating theater capacity, enhance technological investment, and upgrade its X-ray and critical care facilities.


4. Providence Holy Cross Medical Center
The $180 million project, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, was a collaboration between HMC Architects and Swinerton Builders. The four-story building boasts a sleek, sharp design, complemented by a refreshing environment created by its large glass walls that bring in the essence of the sea breeze. The hospital blends elegant white and blue colors in its architecture.
Reflecting the hospital's commitment to sustainability and quality service, the new center has earned a Silver LEED certification. The grand opening was held in July 2011, and the tower now provides specialized medical care for women and infants.


5. Benjamin Russell Children's Hospital
Focused on making a significant impact on the lives of children, their families, and their communities, this iconic hospital was designed to set a new standard for pediatric care in Alabama. The sleek glass façade and white concrete exterior are the result of work by global architectural firm HKS. The expansion of this single healthcare facility makes Benjamin Russell Children's Hospital (BRHFC) the third-largest children's hospital in the United States and ranks among the top 10 pediatric centers in terms of bed capacity.
Standing out in a complex of buildings, the hospital features curved glass and playful architectural and interior design elements, making it family-friendly with clear connections for easy navigation. It integrates sustainability with natural lighting and views of the campus and city. The hospital is the first in Alabama to receive a Gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), opening its doors in August 2012 as the first hospital in the state to achieve LEED Silver certification.


6. Kaiser Foundation Hospital
Kaiser Foundation Hospital, originally opened in Fontana, California in 1943, has undergone major renovations every decade to meet growing demand. The latest upgrade, a newly built facility on the original site, was completed in May 2013. Designed by HMC Architects, this state-of-the-art medical center not only offers a modern and beautiful environment but also meets California’s stringent earthquake safety standards.
The facility spans 490,000 square feet across seven floors and includes 314 beds, replacing the hospital’s aging structure. The new building integrates patient-centered spaces, energy-efficient lighting, and recycled water for its landscaping. Additionally, efforts have been made to create a sound-friendly environment, including energy efficiency improvements, water conservation renovations, and the use of recycled materials in construction.


7. Children’s Hospital in Orange County
There is no brighter, more colorful 8-story tower in Bill Holmes than at Children’s Hospital in Orange County (CHOC). The Texas-based architecture firm FKP is behind the design of this striking facility, which is created with a team focused on crafting a building that reflects vibrant energy, progressive vision, and a world-class ambiance. Each floor is themed based on its unique nature, starting with ‘fossils’ in the basement and ending with ‘space’ on the top level. The new hospital building, inaugurated in March 2013, was built with sustainability principles and uses recycled materials wherever possible.
The state-of-the-art facility includes 279 beds and four centers of excellence—CHOC Children’s Center, Neuroscience, Orthopedics, and the Hyundai Cancer Institute. It also features a 30-bed award-winning pediatric intensive care unit, where doctors provide world-class care to children and adolescents, often saving lives. The units were the first in the country to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence in Critical Care from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Children’s Hospital of Orange County is also a teaching hospital for students from the University of California, Irvine, and is dedicated to training the next generation of pediatric specialists.


8. Royal Children’s Hospital

Royal Children’s Hospital is designed to be a world-class facility, offering the latest in high-quality care in an environment that meets the needs of children, families, and staff. The design includes interactive play areas, a two-story coral reef aquarium, a scientific exhibition wonder, a beanbag theater showing the latest films, and the Starlight Room.
The hospital focuses on family-centered care, with relaxation areas and outdoor balconies located on each floor. Additionally, the new hospital features a supermarket and a gym. Over 85% of the rooms are single-occupancy, providing privacy for both patients and their families. The hospital is surrounded by Royal Park, offering views of greenery and plenty of natural light. Royal Children’s Hospital has a distinctive façade inspired by leaves, designed to be environmentally friendly by reducing water and energy consumption as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The changing colors of the leaves range from brilliant reds to lush greens. The large outpatient building is divided by a series of courtyards, while the inpatient tower is a star-shaped design facing the quieter northwest side of the hospital. The new children’s hospital blends four-bed and single-bed accommodations. The design includes a rooftop garden where young patients can engage in a variety of activities in fresh air. In 2016, the rooftop garden playground was closed due to health and safety concerns.


9. Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula - Montage Health
Located along the Northern California coastline, Monterey is a renowned tourist destination known for its breathtaking natural landscapes. Established in the 1960s along the scenic Pebble Beach, Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula blends the beauty of nature with architectural design that integrates open spaces, greenery, and floral elements. Designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, the hospital reflects this harmony, standing as a testament to skillful design that complements its coastal surroundings.
Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula is no stranger to incorporating design elements that aid healing. The hospital first opened in 1962 and was designed by the celebrated architect Edward Durell Stone, who included features like abundant natural light and seamless connections to the surrounding natural world. The Los Angeles-based global architectural firm HOK was later commissioned to expand the facility, completing the work in three phases between 2006 and 2010. The expansion was carefully blended with the original architectural style, while adhering to the local zoning regulations of the city.


10. Akershus University Hospital (Lorenskog, Norway)
Akershus University Hospital is a modern and patient-friendly facility created by the Scandinavian firm Arkitektfirmaet C. F. Møller. Regarded as one of the most contemporary hospitals in Europe, it features distinct areas for different treatments, each designed to offer visual stimulation and a unique environment. Located in Lorenskog, Norway, the hospital uses geothermal heating for most of its warmth needs. Sustainability was a key focus during construction, with locally sourced materials incorporated throughout. "The design prioritizes natural light in every corner of the building, with special attention given to the surrounding landscapes and external environments," stated C. F. Møller Architects in their project documentation, highlighting the use of glass and wood panels to create varied structures and an eco-friendly atmosphere.
Opened in 2008, Akershus University Hospital continued to expand its emergency department until 2014. In 2009, it won the Best International Design award at the Better Healthcare Building Awards. Designed by the leading Danish firm C. F. Moller Architects, it remains one of Europe's most modern hospitals. "The design gives maximum priority to natural light throughout the hospital, along with an investment in the surrounding landscape and external environments," C. F. Møller Architects explained in their project documentation, emphasizing the use of glass and wood panels to create distinctive structures and an environmentally friendly atmosphere.
