1. Moc Chau
Known as Vietnam's second Dalat, the Moc Chau Plateau is famous for its cool, temperate climate. The most popular tourist destinations here include Dai Yem Waterfall, Son Moc Huong Cave, Pine Forest, and Tea Hills. What makes Moc Chau particularly attractive to young travelers are its vast fields of wildflowers such as mustard blossoms, plum flowers, and bauhinia trees. Every season, these flowers bloom in vibrant colors, creating stunning natural carpets that make for perfect, romantic photo opportunities. Each season, Moc Chau dresses in a new look: green pastures stretching as far as the eye can see, endless white mustard fields, pink peach blossoms, and pure white plum flowers that burst with life. Just before and after the Lunar New Year (from late January to the end of February), Moc Chau is adorned with the white blooms of peach and plum trees in every corner.
While in Moc Chau, be sure to visit the Ngũ Động Bản Ôn (Five Caves of Bản Ôn). This stunning cave system, with five caves nestled beneath a mountain, offers breathtaking natural beauty. Ngũ Động Bản Ôn's untouched beauty and impressive stalactite formations make it a must-see destination. The caves are named after the five elements in the Chinese philosophy: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. To reach this site, visitors can travel by car or motorbike. Upon reaching the Moc Chau intersection, simply turn right towards the farm area and continue for about 7 km to find the entrance to the caves.


2. Thac Ba Lake
Anyone who has visited Thac Ba Lake (Yen Binh, Yen Bai) is sure to be mesmerized by its stunning beauty – a clear, poetic lake surrounded by majestic landscapes. Not only does the lake provide hydroelectric power for the national grid, but it also serves as a vital ecosystem that ensures clean air and is a popular stop for spiritual tourism. Often called the 'gem of the mountains' or 'Ha Long Bay on the mountains,' Thac Ba is one of the three largest man-made lakes in Vietnam, covering approximately 20,000 hectares and featuring over 1,300 islands, creating an awe-inspiring natural panorama.
Thac Ba Hydroelectric Lake lies across two districts, Yen Binh and Luc Yen, in Yen Bai Province, about 180 km from Hanoi via National Route 2. As one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in Vietnam, Thac Ba is often referred to as a precious jewel nestled in the mountainous region of the Northwest. Visitors to Thac Ba can take a boat ride through the many islands, enjoying the cool breeze carrying the mist from the lake’s surface, while gazing at the lush green forests reflected on the calm, clear waters. The serene beauty of the landscape offers a peaceful, cleansing experience, leaving one feeling refreshed and immersed in a stunning watercolor-like painting.


3. Dong Van Stone Plateau
Located at an elevation ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level, the Dong Van Stone Plateau spans across four districts: Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Meo Vac, and Dong Van in Ha Giang Province. According to the Global Geopark Network (GGN) Advisory Board of UNESCO, the Dong Van plateau is one of the most unique limestone regions in the world, offering significant geological insights, natural phenomena, stunning landscapes, a high level of biodiversity, and rich cultural traditions of the indigenous people. In 2010, it was officially recognized as a Global Geopark by the GGN.
The Dong Van Stone Plateau is not only one of the most extraordinary limestone regions in Vietnam, but it also holds valuable records of the Earth's geological history. Today, it is a key tourist attraction in Ha Giang, drawing visitors to explore its remarkable landscapes and cultural landmarks, including the buckwheat flower fields, the historical Vương Family Mansion, the ancient town of Dong Van, the highland markets, the Mã Pì Lèng Pass, and the sacred Lung Cu Flagpole. Reaching the summit of the plateau, where the national flag flutters proudly, evokes a deep sense of pride, reminding visitors of their connection to the country and its rich history. It's an experience every Vietnamese should have in their lifetime.


4. Tien Son Cave
Tien Son Cave is located in Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. The cave is famous for its 36 magical chambers, its surrounding ethnic minority villages that still preserve many ancient customs, and its representation of the natural beauty and people of the mountainous highlands. The journey to the cave takes visitors through the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range, where the famous Phan Xi Pang peak often disappears into a blanket of clouds. Inside the cave, visitors are greeted by shimmering stalactites in a variety of shapes and colors, with a clear stream running through it. The refreshing sound of the flowing water adds to the atmosphere, creating an unexpectedly delightful experience.
Tien Son Cave in Lai Chau is also known as Dan Don Cave, Po Ngai Tung Cave, or the White Stone Cave, names given by the local Lự people. The cave earned its namesake because of the distinctive white rock wall at the entrance. The cave complex is located in Binh Lu Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province, about 4 km from Tam Duong Town and 50 km from Sapa. The cave is easily accessible as it is situated right next to National Route 4D. Formed millions of years ago from limestone, Tien Son Cave remains hidden behind lush forests, making its stunning beauty a well-kept secret until you enter.


5. Hua Pe Hot Springs
For those seeking a peaceful retreat away from adventurous explorations and nature sights, the Hua Pe Hot Springs offers a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. Located in Thanh Luong Commune, Dien Bien District, just 5 km northwest of Dien Bien Phu City, this hot spring offers a rare mineral-rich water source at a temperature of approximately 60°C. Nearby, the serene Pe Luong artificial lake, surrounded by refreshing breezes, adds to the tranquility of the area. This eco-tourism destination has become increasingly popular for its natural beauty and therapeutic benefits.
The mineral water from Hua Pe Hot Springs is considered very safe and highly beneficial for the body, as confirmed by the Institute of Medicine. The locals even use the water in their daily lives. What makes Hua Pe unique is that the spring water is drinkable, offering health benefits that help detoxify and replenish essential minerals. Visitors often say that while there are many hot springs, only Hua Pe’s water is fit for drinking. So, when visiting, don’t forget to take a sip of this rejuvenating spring water. After enjoying the hot spring, you can explore the surrounding nature, immersing yourself in the peaceful environment that feels truly magical.


6. Cuu Thac Tu Son
Compared to other mountain and forest destinations, Cuu Thac Tu Son is perhaps the easiest to reach and navigate. From My Dinh bus station in Hanoi, regular buses depart for Bai Chao - Hoa Binh, available every day of the week. For a more adventurous and budget-friendly option, visitors can take a motorbike ride along National Route 6, reaching Luong Son Town, then turn left toward Bai Chao. From here, it's just a 2 km journey to the falls. The nine waterfalls, each with its own unique charm, cascade alongside the white waters of the Tinh Au Co waterfall, creating a stunning backdrop. A giant round stone, resembling a massive egg, symbolizes the ancient Vietnamese legend of 'a hundred eggs hatching a hundred children,' adding a mythical touch to the scene.
If you're unsure where to go when visiting Cuu Thac Tu Son, the Silver Waterfall is also a wonderful suggestion. The waterfall stands at an impressive height of 20 meters, and when viewed from a distance, it resembles the flowing hair of a Mường girl. As the sunlight strikes the waterfall, it sparkles, adding a touch of golden radiance to the surroundings. The sound of the rushing water plays like a lively symphony. The Tinh Au Co waterfall, named after the legendary figure, flows from high above and cascades into the Lac Long Quan Lake, with natural stone formations that resemble the myth of 'a hundred eggs hatching a hundred children.' The natural scenery here is incredibly romantic, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and relaxing. As a result, this spot is one of the most popular attractions in Cuu Thac Tu Son.


7. O Quy Ho Pass
O Quy Ho Pass is named after the O Quy Ho village, located next to National Route 4D, now part of the O Quy Ho ward in the town of Sa Pa. The name, which is derived from the H'Mong language, is pronounced more gently by outsiders. Additionally, it's sometimes referred to as Hoang Lien Pass or Hoang Lien Son Pass, due to the pass crossing the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, or the 'Cloud Pass' because it is perpetually covered by clouds at its summit. O Quy Ho Pass winds its way along the slopes of the Hoang Lien Son range, stretching far and weaving through the dramatic cliffs with an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding wilderness. On clear days, from the summit, visitors can marvel at the winding road leading up the pass, catch a glimpse of remote villages in the distance, and even enjoy the majestic sight of Fansipan peak bathed in sunlight.
At the base of O Quy Ho Pass towards Sapa lies the Silver Waterfall, one of the top 10 most beautiful waterfalls in Lao Cai. This powerful waterfall cascades in a foamy rush, leaving visitors in awe. Also nearby is the Love Waterfall, another popular spot, especially among couples. Unlike the dramatic Silver Waterfall, Love Waterfall is more graceful and gentle, resembling a soft silk ribbon. According to legend, this is where a woodcutter and a fairy once met. After marveling at these majestic waterfalls, you can conquer the summit of O Quy Ho Pass, also known as the Heaven’s Gate of O Quy Ho or Sapa’s Heaven Gate. It’s a must-see destination when visiting Sapa, offering a panoramic view of the Hoang Lien Son range shrouded in a sea of clouds.


8. Sapa
Sapa is a charming small town nestled in the mountainous region of Lao Cai province. Renowned for its cool, fresh climate, Sapa experiences heavy rainfall between June and August, with some areas even witnessing snowfall during the winter months, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. While in Sapa, beyond the unique experience of visiting the love market shrouded in mist, tourists can explore the historic Stone Church, an architectural marvel. You can also visit the vibrant Ham Rong Mountain, adorned with thousands of blooming flowers, or explore the mystical Ta Phin Cave, home to fascinating rock formations. For adventure seekers, conquering the summit of Fansipan, standing at 3,143 meters, is a challenging yet exhilarating journey that promises unforgettable memories. Ham Rong Mountain is located right in the heart of the town, where visitors can stay at nearby hotels and enjoy panoramic views of Sapa, the Muong Hoa Valley, and the ethereal Ta Phin Village in the mist. As you hike up the mountain, you'll be greeted by an array of colorful flowers in full bloom. The Love Waterfall, located around 12km from the town center and along the road to the summit of O Quy Ho Pass, is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the region. The refreshing mist from the waterfall will invigorate you as you listen to the enchanting legend of the Love Waterfall. Along the way, don’t forget to visit the Silver Waterfall! The Stone Church in Sapa, built in 1895, stands as a proud symbol of the town, showcasing the enduring influence of French architecture that still graces Sapa today.


9. Mai Chau Valley
Mai Chau, located in Hoa Binh Province, is 130 km from Hanoi. This serene, untouched valley is home to a diverse mix of ethnic communities. Known for its ever-changing beauty throughout the year, Mai Chau is stunning in every season. In spring, the valley blooms with the pure white of plum flowers and the vibrant red of peach blossoms. As summer arrives, the landscape turns lush and green, with the forests and fields thriving in their full glory. Come autumn, the golden hues of the terraced rice paddies and ripe rice fields paint a breathtaking scene. Local handicrafts such as scarves, traditional Thai dresses, woven bags, bows, arrows, flutes, drums, and buffalo horns are displayed outside each home. Visitors are free to try them on or take photos without the pressure of commercialism. In the evening, after a tour and a meal at a stilt house, guests can enjoy traditional performances, including Thai dance and Mong dances by the fire, creating a memorable cultural experience.


10. Mu Cang Chai
Located in Yen Bai Province, Mu Cang Chai is famous for its over 2000 hectares of terraced rice fields, creating a stunning natural landscape. The area’s vibrant greenery, especially during the harvest season when the fields turn golden, makes it a favorite destination for tourists and photographers alike. Key attractions include Lung Lo Pass, Mo Waterfall, and the Thai Village, with the most charming being Tu Le Commune. From April to June, the rice fields in Mu Cang Chai lie bare after the harvest, awaiting the summer rains as farmers prepare for the next planting season. During this time, the terraced fields shine like smooth, glistening mirrors, creating a breathtaking sight that leaves visitors mesmerized. Whether under the soft morning sunlight, the scorching midday heat, or the evening sunset casting a golden glow over the wet fields, the landscape is an ever-changing masterpiece. Summer rains may surprise you on your journey, but they don't last long, and after the showers, the scenery becomes even more enchanting.
