1. Pongour Waterfall
Boasting a rugged, wild beauty typical of waterfalls in the highlands, Pongour Waterfall is a must-see destination for nature lovers and is regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Central Highlands.
Pongour Waterfall is located along the Dinh Nhim River, which has created numerous stunning waterfalls and lakes in Da Lat. The waterfall reaches a height of around 40 meters and spans over 100 meters, cascading gently through seven natural stone steps, creating a white foam spray. For this reason, it is often referred to as 'The Seven-Step Waterfall.' Surrounding the waterfall is a vast 2.5-hectare pristine forest with diverse vegetation. The area below the falls is a large serene lake, dotted with many boulders in the water, making it a perfect spot for camping and relaxation while enjoying the scenic view.
Currently, the flow of Pongour Waterfall has diminished somewhat, as a dam has been constructed upstream for the Đại Ninh Hydroelectric Plant. Despite this, the beauty of the waterfall remains largely unchanged. Visitors to Pongour can enjoy the majestic, picturesque scenery of the mountains and forests, experience the tranquility of the cool waters, and listen to the birds chirping and the sound of the waterfall throughout the day and night. According to some geological studies by the French, the area is rich in kaolin, a type of white clay, which is why they named the waterfall 'Pongour,' derived from the K'Ho language meaning 'the master of the white clay land.'
The French also once voted Pongour Waterfall as 'The Most Majestic Waterfall in Indochina' and King Bao Dai famously called it 'The Greatest Waterfall of the South' after witnessing its breathtaking beauty. In 2000, Pongour Waterfall was officially recognized as a National Scenic Landmark.
Pongour Waterfall is the only waterfall in Vietnam that hosts an annual festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, coinciding with the Lantern Festival. During this time, many cultural and entertainment activities are organized by the locals, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
