1. EMPA Gold-Woven Tie
After a decade of research, scientists from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, also known as the renowned EMPA textile experts based in St. Gallen, succeeded in creating a fiber made from a blend of silk and 24-carat gold. It took the researchers at EMPA almost ten years to perfect the optimal mix of silk and gold.
The gold tie project proved that advanced technology can also support the evolution of fashion. EMPA researchers developed a method to coat polyester fibers with a nanometer-thin layer of precious metal, making them flexible enough to be woven. After ten years of development, it was finally possible to preserve the brilliant shine of gold permanently on fabric.
To commemorate their achievement, EMPA released a limited edition of gold ties, designed at the Hofmannund Co.AG tie factory in Zürich just before Christmas. They were initially sold for 7,500 Swiss francs (approximately 8,450 USD) each. Even at full capacity, production is limited to just 600 ties per year. To create these ties, a fabric large enough to make three ties is coated with 25 grams of pure 24-carat gold. Therefore, each tie contains 8 grams of gold.

2. Stefano Ricci's Crystal-Embellished Tie
Stefano Ricci ties represent the highest quality in men's accessories. Handcrafted from luxurious silks in their Florentine workshop, these ties are made for the sophisticated man—one who is formal, confident, and stylish. The most expensive tie in the collection is the Precious Crystal Pleated, priced at 1,775 USD.
From the very beginning, silk has been a key element in Stefano Ricci’s products. These hand-printed silks are used to create some of the world’s most famous ties. All of Stefano Ricci’s crystal-embellished ties are made from 100% satin silk and measure 76cm by 9cm. The price difference between ties isn’t related to the silk quality but to the number of Swarovski crystals they feature. The most expensive crystal-embellished ties in the collection are adorned with at least 3,000 crystals each, making them a luxurious and elegant accessory.

3. Hermes Cuir Baseball Tie

What sets Hermes silk apart is the meticulous control over every stage of the production, from design to silk printing (which creates a richer array of colors) to the final product, which is of superior quality compared to jacquard-woven ties. Each tie is crafted with a triple-fold structure and hand-stitched, measuring 170cm in length, with a neat stitch finish on the back. One of the priciest offerings is the Cuir Baseball Hermes tie, priced at 1,525 USD.
