Although being the main character means appearing for the majority of the game's duration, shining brightly demands overcoming challenges and hardships. Sometimes, it's not overly difficult, but often it confronts players with incredibly precarious and daunting situations. Raiden
Raiden has encountered numerous unfortunate incidents, such as discovering his wife is a spy, having his limbs chopped off multiple times, being forced to carry out missions without clothing, and notably slipping on bird droppings.
For the Metal Gear fan community, Raiden is a true comedic figure. However, later on, Raiden got his own spin-off game, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, to restore his reputation. Interestingly, as soon as he enters Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Raiden's arm gets chopped off again, prompting him to exclaim, 'Again!'
Isaac's Struggle
Isaac leads a solitary life: No toys, no friends, not even a scrap of cloth to cover himself. His mother even confiscated his drawings and shaved his head. Fearing his mother's readiness to sacrifice him, Isaac fled to seek survival, only to face even more terrifying situations.
Isaac not only has to fight, but even after completing the game, this poor protagonist is suffocated in a toy chest. However, in the Repentance DLC, Isaac finally gets the ending he deserves. Overall, it's a happier ending than the original game, folks.
Isaac Clarke – Dead Space Series
Isaac Clarke is a space miner, the main character of the survival horror game series, Dead Space. In the first game, Isaac visits the Ishimura spaceship to see his longtime girlfriend, Nicole. However, upon arrival, he discovers that the ship's crew has all died and turned into terrifying zombie-like creatures called Necromorphs. Of course, Nicole is also gone.
Despite not being a soldier, to survive, Isaac must use everything he has to fight against the space zombies in the game. In conditions lacking weapons, he must resort to various mining tools to resist and destroy zombies. But these things are not fancy weapons, so they're not very effective against the zombie horde, making players feel extremely miserable, let alone Isaac Clarke himself.
Venom Snake – Metal Gear Solid 5
Venom Snake, once a loyal army medic beside Big Boss, witnessed the fateful day when their base was destroyed and their comrades were killed by enemies. With Big Boss now hunted by the world, Venom Snake is tasked with becoming Big Boss, or rather a decoy for him, to allow Big Boss to rebuild his new base.
Forget all the tough missions or the heartbreaking decisions Venom Snake had to endure throughout Metal Gear Solid 5. His most agonizing moment is waking up from a coma to find himself with the identity and face of Big Boss, leading his comrades. No one knows who Venom Snake truly is; they just know him as Big Boss or perhaps even as Big Boss's doppelganger. Perhaps that's why Metal Gear Solid 5 is called The Phantom Pain.
Booker DeWitt – Bioshock Infinite
The protagonist of Bioshock Infinite is Booker DeWitt, a troubled former soldier. His wife died giving birth, leaving him depressed and drowning in alcohol. Eventually, he even sold his own daughter to pay off gambling debts. Later, consumed by regret for selling his daughter, he goes to Columbia to reclaim her, only to find out she now possesses superpowers and is targeted by powerful forces.
Booker wants to free her, but life doesn't go as planned. Throughout the game's storyline, he realizes that for the girl to be free and for Columbia to have a good outcome, he must die. In various timelines, Booker accepts a baptism for his past misdeeds and is then reborn as Zachary Comstock, who is also the antagonist in the game. Thus, Booker must sacrifice himself for Comstock not to exist. However, while this Booker in this timeline chooses death, it's uncertain if Booker in other timelines would do the same. So, both players and characters in the game are unsure if this sacrifice will have any impact.
