The Oceanography Institute in Nha Trang is not only a hub for marine science research but also one of the city's most popular attractions. Part of Vietnam's National Center for Natural Science and Technology, the institute was established in 1923 by the French. The choice of Nha Trang, with its deep coastal waters, made it an ideal location for marine research, strategically positioned near international maritime zones.
At the Oceanography Institute, visitors can explore over 4,000 marine species and gain a deeper understanding of the South China Sea, which is rich in valuable resources. The exhibits also serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting the sovereignty of Vietnam’s waters and maintaining environmental and ecological balance for future generations.
The museum houses several key exhibits: marine species breeding areas, an artificial mangrove forest, a large marine species exhibit (including a whale skeleton), displays on natural disasters, intangible marine resources, and marine research tools. A special exhibition, “Hoang Sa – Truong Sa Marine Resources” (2011), aims to raise public awareness about Vietnam’s sea and island resources, contributing to national security and marine sovereignty education. It’s a valuable resource for researchers, students, and visitors to learn about Vietnam’s territorial waters and marine ecosystems, as well as to inspire new ideas for tourism and business development.
In addition to visiting the Oceanography Institute, tourists can visit Tri Nguyen Island’s fish ponds, the aquarium at Hon Ngoc Viet, and the local fishing village, where they can buy fresh seafood and sample dishes made from fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. The Oceanography Institute and its Marine Museum provide extensive knowledge about Vietnam’s marine life and environmental protection, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the country’s natural heritage.

3. Ponagar Cham Towers
Ponagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang is regarded as one of the region’s most significant cultural landmarks. This complex of towers showcases the distinctive architectural and sculptural art of the Cham people. Located atop a small hill called 'Nui Thap Ba' near the mouth of the Cai River, it sits along National Route 1A in Vinh Phuoc Ward, north of Nha Trang city. Due to its prime location in the heart of Nha Trang, most visitors make sure to visit and admire this iconic structure.
The architecture of the Ponagar Cham Towers consists of three main levels. The lower level originally featured a gateway tower, now lost to time. From here, stone steps lead to the second level, which still has two rows of large octagonal columns, each more than 1 meter in diameter and over 3 meters tall. Surrounding these large columns are 12 smaller, shorter columns, all set on a raised brick platform. The top level is where the main towers stand, right in front of the central tower.
The name Ponagar refers to the tallest of the towers, which stands about 23 meters high. The tower complex was built by the Cham king Harivácman between 813 and 817. Over the centuries, the towers have suffered from the effects of weathering, and during the French colonial period, the École française d'Extrême-Orient helped restore parts of the structure and added several sculptures. The first level of the main tower is paved with brick and has 14 pillars and consecutive steps. The second level includes a group of four towers arranged in a carpenter's square layout. All four towers are built in the Cham style, with tightly interlocked bricks and no visible mortar. Inside, the towers are hollow up to the top, with entrances facing east. The exterior of the towers is adorned with intricate reliefs, columns, and decorative features. Atop the pillars are stone decorations shaped like small towers, giving the effect of multiple small towers atop the main one. The walls also feature numerous sculptures and terracotta reliefs, including depictions of the goddess Ponagar, the deity Tenexa, celestial maidens, and various animals like deer, golden geese, and lions. The central tower houses a statue of the goddess Ponagar, symbolizing beauty, art, and creativity. The towers were built in four levels, each with doors, statues of gods, and animal figures made of stone. Inside the main tower stands a 2.6-meter-high black granite statue of the goddess seated on a lotus-shaped pedestal, with her back resting against a large stone shaped like a bodhi leaf. This masterpiece of Cham sculpture combines round and bas-relief techniques. The other towers are dedicated to the deities Shiva, Sanhaka, and Ganesha.

When visiting Hon Chong, travelers are likely to hear locals share intriguing stories related to the mysterious five-finger-shaped indentation found on one of the rocks. There isn't just one story explaining it, but rather three different interpretations. Regardless of which version you believe, the marks left behind create a lasting impression. It's as though the hands of an artistic creator—Mother Nature herself—arranged the rocks with care, blending raw beauty with deep meaning. The legends associated with this place stem from traditional Vietnamese beliefs and reflect both fears of nature’s power and the revered bond between husband and wife.

Its endless white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and colorful marine life make it a mesmerizing destination for travelers. The most exciting way to reach Van Phong is by car from Nha Trang. The drive takes you through long stretches of white sand dunes, resembling the famous white sands from the song by composer Le Quang, which describes the challenging beauty of Binh Thuan. Once you arrive at the shore, you will cross charming wooden bridges, much like those in the southern river deltas, before boarding a boat that glides through the waves to the bay. A highlight of visiting Van Phong is the Son Dung Beach. The beach is not only unique because the nearby village consists of just 11 families living in near isolation, but also because it is home to a fresh water spring buried beneath the salty sea water. By digging into the sand near the shore, you can watch fresh water rise, and after a few moments, it becomes clear. Fishermen take advantage of this fresh water for drinking and daily activities.
Due to its pristine natural beauty, Van Phong Bay has been ranked as one of the top 4 ideal beach destinations in the world by the World Marine Association. It has also been recognized by Vietnam’s National Tourism Administration as one of the country's key tourism development areas.
