3. Cu Chi Tunnels
Cu Chi Tunnels are an extensive underground network located in Cu Chi District, about 70 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. This network was built by the Viet Minh and the South Vietnam Liberation Front during the Indochina War and the Vietnam War. The tunnels feature various rooms, including medical facilities, living quarters, kitchens, storage, and workspaces, all connected by underground passages extending for approximately 250 km. The system includes ventilation shafts disguised by surrounding foliage. Cu Chi Tunnels are located at the end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the famous "steel land" area, symbolizing the resilience of the local people and military forces. During the 1968 Tet Offensive, the Southern Liberation Forces used these tunnels as a launching point for their attack on Saigon.
After the war, the Cu Chi Tunnels site became a national historical monument. In 2015, it was awarded the title of Labor Hero for its outstanding achievements in labor and innovation. Over the course of 20 years, the site has welcomed over 20 million visitors from both Vietnam and abroad. On February 12, 2016, the site was officially recognized as a National Special Heritage Monument. Aside from exploring this historic site, visitors can engage in activities such as sport shooting and learning how to disassemble and reassemble rifles, giving them a firsthand experience of the hardships faced by soldiers during the war.
