Currently, our country is advancing in information technology and communications, where almost everything can be done via computers and smartphones. However, alongside this progress, the reading culture among young people is facing challenges. Reading books is a beneficial habit that brings numerous advantages to one’s life. Books expand our knowledge, offer profound insights, provide valuable lessons, and evoke new emotions that can only be experienced through reading. Nowadays, very few people engage in reading regularly, with most readers being either older adults or children, while the youth tend to be less interested. The key difference between readers and non-readers lies in the impact on their lives: young readers tend to acquire more knowledge, think critically, achieve success more easily, and develop positive character traits, while non-readers often struggle with limited knowledge, making success more difficult. This shift in habits is primarily due to young people spending excessive time on Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube, and streaming online content, which negatively affects not only their physical health but also their mental well-being, knowledge, and cognitive response. Given the many benefits of reading, we should work together to promote a reading movement, encourage everyone—especially young people—to embrace books and experience the joy of reading for a more fulfilling and socially harmonious life.

Today, the culture of reading is often discussed as an essential cultural activity, where individuals engage with books, newspapers, and various resources to access information and knowledge scientifically. Simply put, it reflects a person’s attitude toward learning and intellectual growth. Reading culture plays a significant role in nurturing and enhancing one’s skills and knowledge, contributing to the formation and development of a person’s character. Books are an immense source of human knowledge, each offering valuable insights and life lessons. Through daily reading, one can acquire vast amounts of knowledge and improve communication skills, making their expression more fluent and vocabulary richer. The importance and benefits of reading are undeniable. Indeed, books are not just a bound collection of information but also a spiritual refuge during tough times or when seeking empathy. Yet, many young people today seem to be drawn away by the allure of the digital world, neglecting the value of books. Instead of opting for reading, they often resort to meaningless online games, resulting in a decline in reading culture among youth—a significant concern for families and society. To revitalize the reading culture, we must: Raise awareness about the importance of reading, and encourage individuals to find a genre they genuinely enjoy. When reading a book you love, your enthusiasm and passion grow, making the reading experience more fulfilling. So, instead of forcing yourself into a reading routine, why not seek out books that truly captivate your interest and allow for meaningful reflection?

The reading culture is an essential aspect of our lives. It reflects our attitude and approach toward knowledge and learning. Before the advent of multimedia, books were the primary means for people to access information, culture, and knowledge. Reading books is a way to relax, accumulate knowledge, enhance our thinking abilities, and guide us toward the ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty. Thus, it can be said that any nation that promotes a strong reading culture will likely have a higher level of education and a lower crime rate. Japan, one of the few countries where the number of books published annually continues to grow, is a prime example. However, today's youth in Vietnam appear indifferent to the culture of reading, leading to negative consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. This issue may stem from the explosion of information technology, the rise of social media, online gaming, and countless television programs. So, what solutions can we implement to foster a reading culture in our country? It might be helpful to organize more book fairs, initiate reading campaigns in schools and workplaces, and leverage technology to diversify reading formats, making the experience more engaging. In conclusion, we all need to understand and appreciate the importance of reading, turning it into a daily habit. As former U.S. President Barack Obama once said: 'Reading is fundamental. If you know how to read, the world opens up to you.'

4. Essay 7
In today's world, the rapid growth of information technology has had a significant impact on young people, both positively and negatively. One of the most pressing issues is the decline of the reading culture among today's youth, which deserves our attention. What do we understand by reading culture? It refers to our attitude and approach toward the knowledge contained in books. It’s essential to read books in a way that is both appropriate and enriching. We know that before the rise of audiovisual media, books were the primary gateway to information, culture, and knowledge. Reading is a vital way to relax, accumulate knowledge, and enhance our thinking. However, today's youth seem indifferent to the culture of reading. Do they think modern information sources make books unnecessary? Cultural figure Hữu Ngọc once asked, 'Does the 21st century still need poetry? Does it still need a reading culture?' He answered affirmatively, asserting that 'even though music can replace some functions of poetry, poetry will always be cherished.' Similarly, regarding reading, he emphasized, 'While images may pass quickly, words linger long.' The reading culture is at a crossroads, facing both opportunity and risk. The opportunity lies in the vast amount of knowledge now available to everyone, but there is a risk that this could diminish the habit of reading due to the overwhelming appeal of multimedia content. What future lies ahead for the reading culture in the age of information explosion? Unlike a few decades ago, today’s book market is incredibly diverse in both content and form. Is today’s youth too lazy to read, or do they simply not know how to choose the right books? Some may read books just because they are trending. For instance, books like 'Forever 20' and 'Le Van Loves and Lives' created a buzz, while others read books like 'The World is Flat,' a thought-provoking work by sociologist Thomas Friedman, but often fail to grasp the author's deeper insights. Despite not fully understanding the content, young people continue to follow trends and buy books just to keep up with others. Even more concerning is the rise of 'black market' books that are widely shared among young readers. It's a worrying trend. Some also argue that reading books is outdated, and that the internet offers faster, easier, and more affordable ways to gain information. This mindset is misguided. While the internet provides vast, real-time information, how much of it truly stays with you? Can you savor each sentence, each piece of wisdom the author intended to convey? With the current state of affairs, we must all reflect on ourselves: Has the reading culture really reached a crisis point? It may not be a 'red alert' yet, but the 'yellow light' is flashing, signaling a growing risk. This is the result of a lack of seriousness in reading and a failure to recognize the importance of books. The information age teaches us to seize opportunities and make the most of them. Therefore, it’s time for everyone to develop a reading habit and enrich themselves with the knowledge that books offer.

In today's world, the rapid growth of information technology, especially the internet, has made it easier than ever to access an immense amount of knowledge. With just a quick Google search, you can find a wealth of information instantly, bringing the world to your fingertips. But does this convenience contribute to the decline of the reading culture among youth, particularly the millennial generation? Modern entertainment products such as movies, music, social media, and online games have deeply influenced the leisure activities of young people, threatening to overshadow the culture of reading. Audiovisual media has become a dominant force, providing a quick and entertaining way for youth to gain new information, yet it also detracts from the reading culture. The younger generation tends to read more for enjoyment than for deep reflection, often making it hard to engage with classic works of literature. Furthermore, the explosive growth of the internet has made young people even lazier about reading books. One student shared with us, 'Just keeping up with my textbook readings and assignments is already a lot. In my free time, I go to the library to read magazines like Hoa Học Trò, Tuổi Trẻ, or just browse the web for entertainment. You need to have a real interest to read books, and if you don’t, it’s hard to absorb anything.' It seems that reading books has become a luxury for many students, increasingly out of reach for today's youth.

We are living in the 4.0 era, where many people have forgotten the simple pleasures that once brought joy to our daily lives. Instead, people are increasingly relying on smartphones and tablets to browse the internet, read news, enjoy entertainment, or shop. With just a tap, the world changes. Particularly, today's youth seem to have completely forgotten the importance of reading books. Reading books offers us a wealth of knowledge. The more we read and learn, the more we expand our understanding, which broadens our future prospects. It can help us fulfill the vision of our late President Ho Chi Minh, who dreamed of seeing our country 'stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the world.' However, when young people read less, or not at all, it leads to poor reading skills, frequent spelling errors, and an inability to speak properly. It can be argued that their vocabulary is shrinking compared to those who make reading a habit. Another alarming reality is that today's youth are often drawn to purely entertaining things like games, social media, and celebrity worship. This shift in interests is making them more idle, pushing aside beneficial habits, such as reading books regularly. As Mahatma Gandhi once wisely said, 'You don’t need to burn books to destroy a culture. Just stop people from reading them.'

Reading books is essential for everyone, especially for students. But how should we read properly? First, we need to define the purpose of reading. Books help us expand our knowledge and explore new horizons. Books have existed in many forms throughout history: inscriptions on stone, bamboo tablets, printed on paper, all serving the common purpose of preserving and disseminating human knowledge. When we read books on science, history, geography, and other subjects, we are not only gaining knowledge, but also nurturing our thoughts and emotions, helping us improve in every aspect. Books also enhance our imagination, association, and creativity. Additionally, reading improves our language skills, both in our native language and foreign languages. Through reading, we can write correctly, use proper grammar, and speak more fluently. Moreover, books serve as guides for living a virtuous life, teaching us the values of good character. Yet, today's youth often overlook the value of books in favor of distractions like social media and virtual apps. They forget that books open doors to new knowledge. When you read, you enrich yourself with more insights and discover new things. Reading books is like exploring new places, uncovering knowledge that helps us appreciate and cherish the small yet meaningful values in life. So, if you consider yourself a person of the modern age, don't forget the importance of books. While you may be connected to the internet or glued to your phone, you can still access knowledge through digital sources or online reading. Read more to enrich your mind and soul.

The writer Mark Twain once said, "A person who does not read books is no better than someone who cannot read." Clearly, reading books to acquire knowledge and enrich our minds is an essential activity. However, in today's world, with the rapid advancement of electronic technology, the way we read and the culture of reading have undergone significant changes. Never before has there been so much concern and discussion about reading and the culture surrounding it. Vietnam is a nation that cherishes books, values knowledge, and continuously strives for intellectual progress. Yet today, the reading culture in Vietnam, especially among the youth, has seriously declined. Fewer young people are reading books, and even fewer are writing them. They prefer entertainment through audiovisual media rather than picking up a book. With the explosive growth of modern industries, especially in information technology, communication, and entertainment, devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops have become more dominant, with their convenience and appeal making them more enticing than printed books. The shift from reading physical books to online reading is an inevitable trend. As the medium has changed, people's interests and reading habits have also transformed. Some young people live superficially, valuing trivial things, which leads to the rise of distorted cultural products. As a result, the culture of reading has severely deteriorated. Building a healthy, effective, and progressive reading culture is still a crucial need in today's society. We don’t just read to enjoy the beauty of art but also to enrich our knowledge and awaken the true, good, and beautiful within us. Yet many people today fail to recognize the role and benefits of books for the mind. In fact, some even show disdain for books and knowledge. History is filled with painful moments when books were destroyed. On the other hand, some people read books incorrectly. They want to appear as avid readers, but despite reading hundreds of books, they remember little of what they’ve read. Although the form and method of reading have changed, books remain a remarkable product of human spirit. Reading is the best way to nourish the mind. A progressive society must be one that values books. We need to build a strong reading culture and encourage society to embrace books. Once people are passionate about reading, knowledge will grow, talents will emerge, and the nation will flourish.

In life, everything holds its own value and significance. One of the most valuable things, which has a profound impact on human life, is books. Books serve as repositories of ancient knowledge across various fields, helping readers expand their understanding and nurture their souls. Reading books enables individuals to absorb knowledge that helps them become more well-rounded, think more clearly, and acquire the necessary skills to seek employment and support themselves. A person cannot grow or expand their knowledge without acquiring the wisdom that is predominantly recorded in books. Furthermore, we can share lessons and spread positive messages through books and writing. Imagine if past generations hadn’t preserved their knowledge and wisdom in books – would we have the valuable lessons we have today? Could society have developed as it has? Books preserve information from a multitude of fields, and beyond providing knowledge, they also help to refine our souls and offer entertainment after a hard day’s work. A society without books would drown in ignorance and stagnation, with no tradition or valuable cultural messages passed down from one generation to the next, losing its distinct cultural identity. Unfortunately, there are still many people who fail to recognize the importance of books, who lack the desire to read and improve themselves, and who prefer to rely on others. These individuals will never advance and will inevitably fall behind. Each person should choose the best books to study and enrich themselves, making their lives more meaningful in the process.

In today's era, the rapid advancement of information technology has significantly influenced the mindset, habits, and reading culture among the youth. Reading books has gradually been replaced by social media and electronic devices, which dominate attention and disrupt the reading habits once common in earlier generations. This shift is a concern that we are actively addressing, seeking solutions to balance preserving the reading culture while embracing the advancements of modern information technology. Reading books is not just a means of accessing information, but also a cultural activity – a form of behavior that reflects our relationship with knowledge and literature. Over the past decade, the explosive growth of information technology and electronic devices has profoundly impacted the behavior, thinking, and habits of young people worldwide, including in Vietnam. The reading culture of today's youth is under serious threat, with the overwhelming influx of information and the rise of multimedia platforms. The current state of youth reading culture is alarming and requires action to enhance reading comprehension of books rather than over-relying on the internet. Many young people lack awareness of the importance and necessity of reading books. Some show indifference and neglect developing the habit of reading. Instead of reading, they spend their time browsing the web, engaging in social media, or playing games. For them, reading culture is non-existent. Many young people are not diligent or committed to learning, failing to develop their knowledge base and patience for acquiring valuable life lessons from books. Instead, they indulge in movies and online entertainment. The reading culture is at risk of being lost and overshadowed by smart electronic devices. Unlike the past, the book market today is diverse, offering a wide range of content that supports both professional and personal needs, with attractive formats and well-crafted designs. However, many young people jump on the bandwagon of reading books without focus or purpose, wasting both time and money, without truly absorbing the messages the books intend to convey. Rather than reading books related to their field of study, they choose romantic novels or spend hours on the internet or social media, often neglecting the importance of purposeful reading. Reading books without selection is ultimately futile.
