10. Tuong Binh Hiep Lacquerware Village
For a long time, Tuong Binh Hiep Lacquerware Village has been renowned for its prestigious, high-quality lacquerware craftsmanship, exported to various destinations worldwide and showcased in numerous domestic and international exhibitions. Here, visitors can witness firsthand the intricate process of lacquerware making, a unique traditional craft found only in Vietnam. Lacquerware comes in various forms such as carved lacquer, sunken lacquer, flat lacquer, raised lacquer, gold and silver inlay, shell inlay, eggshell inlay, and engraved lacquer. The traditional lacquer used in Tuong Binh Hiep is a mixture of lacquer from Nam Vang and Phu Tho, specially blended unlike those from other regions in the country. In the lacquer processing stage, achieving the desired glossiness is considered crucial, requiring skilled craftsmanship and years of experience from lacquer artisans.
To create black lacquer, artisans apply the raw lacquer onto an iron pan and vigorously beat it with an iron pestle under the sun to obtain a beautiful hue. After preparing the raw lacquer, it is continuously beaten until it becomes elastic, and the color appears shiny and smooth. Conversely, for winged lacquer, the process is reversed. The raw lacquer is poured into a wooden pot and stirred with a wooden pestle.
Artisans beat the lacquer for several days until it matures, forms bubbles, and turns transparent, resembling the color of a winged insect, hence the name winged lacquer. With winged lacquer, craftsmen concoct various colors, but the dosage depends on the experience and skills of each individual. For example, to create a luxurious, warm maroon color for framing paintings or making tables and chairs, it requires a secret ratio of red vermilion powder to pink lotus powder.
