In ancient times, there's a saying: “Bat Trang pottery - Van Phuc silk - Thu Hong bamboo weaving - Ngu Xa bronze casting…” When recalling these famous craft villages, people often mention Bat Trang pottery, Van Phuc silk, Ngu Xa bronze casting, but not everyone is familiar with Thu Hong bamboo weaving village—a tranquil village along the meandering Cà Lồ River.
Thu Hong village, formerly known as Thu Thuy in Xuan Thu commune, Soc Son district, lies along the Cà Lồ River, flowing into the Cau River at the Xa intersection, with National Highway 16 passing through. Nestled by the riverside, Thu Hong hides amidst bamboo groves, showcasing the typical characteristics of Northern rural villages. Living along the Cà Lồ River, the villagers build boats for fishing, creating a lively atmosphere with the sounds of sawing and carving.
In the old days, the riverside villages were submerged in water all year round, making it unsuitable to build village temples. Surrounding the village were only bamboo and reeds. Consequently, the villagers built the village temple using these available materials. Over the years, residents began crafting various household items from bamboo, such as baskets, mats, buckets, hats, bamboo beds, and cradles. Initially, these products were purely for domestic use and not considered commodities. However, with the skilled hands and creative minds of Thu Hong residents, these bamboo products gained popularity, becoming sought-after commodities. As bamboo and reeds became scarce in the village, residents had to bring bamboo from other regions.
To create a perfect bamboo product, artisans need to be skillful and have an artistic eye. The process of finding suitable materials is meticulous. To find beautiful bamboo, people have to purchase from Hải Dương, Bắc Kạn, or other bamboo villages. Using bamboo trunks for bed legs, supports, chairs, and bamboo branches for handicrafts, calligraphy, decorative elements on chairs, cradles, and the base for statues of deities like Phuc, Loc, Tho. It seems that cleverness and meticulousness are deeply ingrained in Thu Hong residents, passed down from generation to generation. The village relies on its craft, and even women partake in the bamboo weaving profession. Therefore, the name Thu Hong has become famous, alongside Bat Trang pottery, Van Phuc silk. Hence, the saying persists: “Craftsman’s wood, Thu Hong's bamboo.” Truly, the craftsmen of Thu Hong bamboo weaving possess unparalleled skills. They carve bamboo by hand, sharp yet unbreakable. The secret lies in their ability to “draw lines” without needing strings.
The carving technique, drilling holes when inserting crossbars, is precise, sharp, and does not break the drilled points. This is the experience passed down through many generations, the essence of years dedicated to the craft. During the resistance war, bamboo and reed houses in Thu Hong followed the soldiers to various battlefields. Like many other craft villages in Thang Long, with over 300 years of existence, Thu Hong bamboo weaving village has undergone many ups and downs. At times, it seemed that the craft would gradually decline, especially since the village was annexed into Thu Thuy.
With the development of the economy and a variety of goods, many bamboo products from China flooded the market, attracting consumers with affordable and eye-catching options. As a result, villagers shifted their bamboo weaving workshops to more profitable professions such as trading scrap, casting pots and pans. Each Northern village hides behind a bamboo grove. Bamboo is intimately familiar. People still cannot exclude bamboo products from their lives.
