1. First Man (2018)
First Man (2018) received thunderous applause and was hailed as a strong contender at the 2019 Oscars. The film is so authentic that it feels like a documentary. The story begins in 1961, when astronaut Armstrong (portrayed by Ryan Gosling) faces numerous challenges in his life. He is temporarily grounded after an unsuccessful mission with the X-15. His beloved daughter Karen tragically falls ill and passes away. After ups and downs, Armstrong signs up for NASA's Gemini program. This is a particularly meaningful program, as the two superpowers of the 1960s, the US and the Soviet Union, are engaged in a relentless race on all fronts. In the space race, the Soviet Union temporarily takes the lead, prompting the US to set an ambitious goal: to land a man on the Moon.
The cast of First Man may not be big-name commercial stars, but Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, and Jason Clarke... all demonstrate their acting prowess. In the role of Armstrong, Canadian actor Gosling sheds his charismatic allure to embody the face of an introverted individual.
Throughout the film, Armstrong expresses emotions through his eyes and actions more than dialogue. When hearing about the deaths of close colleagues, he silently hangs up the phone and grabs a towel to wipe the blood-soaked hands from squeezing a shattered glass. Gosling's portrayal aligns well with the real-life Neil Armstrong.
