1. European Migration Crisis
From February 2016, the crucial 'Balkan route' connecting Greece to Germany – the path traversed by hundreds of thousands of migrants in 2015 – was sealed off. A month later, the European Union and Turkey inked a deal to stem the flow of migration to Europe, successfully reducing the number of crossings over the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece. However, the migration across the Mediterranean to Italy reached record levels, with at least 4,700 people reported dead or missing. In France, the infamous 'Calais Jungle' refugee camp near the Calais port was finally closed in October, prompting the authorities to relocate around 7,000 residents to new reception or deportation centers for further processing.
