1. Midsommar
When talking about the most haunting horror movies of all time, one cannot ignore Midsommar. Midsommar is a horror, psychological thriller film, built upon the themes of culture, customs, human nature, with many beautiful and joyful scenes, brimming with 'light' from... hell.
The film revolves around Dani (Florence Pugh), a mentally unstable girl who recently lost her parents and sister. She also feels her boyfriend, Christian, is becoming distant. The following summer, Dani learns that her boyfriend and his friends are going to Sweden to attend the Midsummer festival in the secluded community of Hårga. She decides to join them, hoping it will help mend their relationship. Dani accompanies her boyfriend and three other friends to a remote countryside in Sweden. The group plans to explore interesting cultural customs and relax there for 9 days. However, things don't go as they imagined. The place holds many deadly rituals, putting the entire group in danger.
The horror and terror in Midsommar don't come from jump scares or the sudden appearance of some terrifying force with horrifying imagery or being dominated by supernatural demons. Instead, you'll feel goosebumps from the stark nudity when human bodies are tortured to deformity, bloodshed, as well as the twisted, grotesque, and downright bizarre rituals. Director Ari brings a different concept of horror compared to other films of the same genre, and his debut horror work originates from the deepest fears of bodily pain. How exactly the film unfolds, you'll have to watch it to find out.
