1. Dien Bien Historical Victory Museum
Dien Bien Historical Victory Museum is located on National Route 279, Muong Thanh Ward, Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province. The museum broke ground in October 2012, covering an area of 22,000m2, and officially opened to the public on May 5, 2014, after 19 months of construction. It showcases statues, maps, and relics from the historic Dien Bien Phu battle.
Currently, the museum features five exhibition halls displaying 274 artifacts and 122 paintings. The tour route takes visitors through five main themes: an overview of the resistance against French colonialism; the Dien Bien Phu campaign (including the French colonialists' plans, our strategy, and the campaign's progression); the impact of the Dien Bien Phu victory on both Vietnam and the world; international support during the campaign; and the museum’s tribute to the victory. Today, the Dien Bien Historical Victory Museum attracts hundreds of visitors daily, becoming an important cultural landmark in Dien Bien Province.


2. Muong Thanh Rice Field
Ranked as one of the four largest rice fields in the Northwest region, according to the local saying 'first Thanh, second Lo, third Than, fourth Tac', the Muong Thanh rice field stretches along the Nậm Rốm River, unfolding like a Ban flower, embracing the historical sites of the past battle. Regardless of how you arrive, Muong Thanh’s stunning natural beauty and its fertile landscape will leave you in awe.
Visiting Dien Bien offers not only historical sites but also captivating natural scenery. While it may not be as vast and expansive as the fields in the Mekong Delta, the Muong Thanh rice field has its own charm that will surely delight you. Situated in the heart of the Dien Bien basin, the field is often compared to a giant 'warehouse' filled with corn and rice.
By the end of September, the rice in the Muong Thanh basin starts to ripen, giving visitors the impression of walking through a golden season. It brings a familiar feeling of the northern rural rice fields stretching to the horizon, yet the majestic beauty of the field, surrounded by mountains, remains distinct and unmatched.


3. Pha Din Pass
One of the four most famous mountain passes of the Northwest, Pha Din derives its name from the Thai language. 'Pha' means 'sky' and 'Din' means 'earth', symbolizing the meeting point between heaven and earth. The Pha Din Pass, also known as Dốc Pha Đin, connects the border of Sơn La and Điện Biên provinces, stretching 32 kilometers along National Route 6. The pass runs through Phỏng Lái commune in Thuận Châu district (Sơn La) and Tỏa Tình commune in Tuần Giáo district (Điện Biên). Legend has it that the old residents of Lai Châu and Sơn La used to define their territorial boundary by racing horses up the Pha Din Pass, with Lai Châu’s riders and horses being slightly faster, thus making their portion of the pass longer.
The Pha Din Pass is notoriously steep, perched precariously between towering cliffs on one side and a deep abyss on the other. As a result, the landscape of Pha Din is incredibly majestic, with endless rows of mountains stretching as far as the eye can see.


4. A Pa Chai - The Westernmost Point of Vietnam
A Pa Chai is the westernmost point of mainland Vietnam, located on the border between China and Laos in Sín Thầu commune, Mường Nhé district. It is often referred to as the place where 'a rooster's crow is heard across all three countries.' Situated at an altitude of 1,864 meters above sea level, A Pa Chai is home to the Hà Nhì people and several other ethnic minorities. It is also known for its landmark – the Zero Marker (no number) with coordinates 22°23'53"N 102°8'51"E, located atop Khoang La San mountain in Sín Thầu commune, Mường Nhé district, Điện Biên province.
No visit to Điện Biên is complete without seeing Vietnam's westernmost point. From the top of A Pa Chai, you can marvel at a stunning view of endless mountain ranges stretching into the distance, a truly breathtaking scene for those who love the grandeur of nature. 5. Muong Thanh Bridge
Muong Thanh Bridge, also known as the 'Prenley Bridge', crosses the Nam Rom River and was built by the French after their parachute invasion of Dien Bien Phu. The bridge is located about 300 meters from the intersection of Road 279. It is a military structure that was part of the central area of the Dien Bien Phu fortress.
The bridge is 40 meters long and 5 meters wide. It features simple iron railings on both sides, with no central support. The wooden bridge deck rests on iron beams that are securely linked. Due to its strategic importance in connecting the French command center to the defensive positions on the eastern and northeastern hills of the Dien Bien Phu base, several military strongholds were established around the bridge.

6. Ban Men
Located amidst the vast hills and terraced fields, Ban Men (Thanh Nua Commune, Dien Bien District, Dien Bien Province) is known as a popular community-based tourism destination that attracts both domestic and international tourists. From Dien Bien Phu City, head north along National Route 12 for about 6 kilometers to reach Ban Men. From a distance, Ban Men appears like a picturesque painting, with the mountains at its back and vast fields in front. The traditional stilt houses of the Black Thai people stand out against the green backdrop of trees and the sky.
Not only is Ban Men captivating because of its stunning scenery, but it also offers fresh air, cool weather, and a clean, beautiful environment. The village has over 140 households with more than 587 residents, all belonging to the Black Thai ethnic group. The Black Thai people here sustain themselves through farming rice, growing crops, livestock breeding, and producing traditional handicrafts such as weaving and embroidery.
In addition to enjoying the natural beauty of the Northwest region, visitors to Ban Men can also immerse themselves in the daily activities of the local community, such as preparing traditional dishes (rice wine, grilled fish, sour bamboo shoots, boiled buffalo meat with Chẩm Chéo dip); caring for livestock and poultry; gathering firewood from the forest; fishing in the stream; weaving and embroidering; and participating in cultural activities (singing Thai folk songs, dancing Xòe, fan dances, bamboo pole dances, and playing the traditional pí pặp and pí ỏ flutes).


7. U Va Hot Springs
The U Va tourist area is located in Noong Luong Commune, Dien Bien District, about 15 kilometers southwest of Dien Bien Phu City. U Va is nestled in a mountainous landscape, covering over 73,000 square meters, and features a natural hot spring with temperatures ranging from 76 to 84°C.
The hot spring, named “UVa”, is derived from the local pronunciation of “Ú Vá” by the people of Noong Luong. “Ú” translates to grandmother, while “Vá” means cradle. According to local legends, the hot spring is said to be the resting place of a fairy lying on a beautiful cradle. U Va’s scenery includes rolling hills above, and rivers, streams, and lakes below. Before 2002, the area of Noong Luong, through which the hot spring flows, was merely a grassy field. After a survey, the Dien Bien authorities harnessed the natural mineral spring, bringing it to a higher hillside area.
Visitors to U Va can enjoy activities like swimming and fishing in private pavilions, as well as various recreational services such as badminton, tennis, taking a boat ride to the hot spring, and watching traditional Thai and H'Mong performances of Xòe dance and folk songs. The U Va Hot Spring has become a popular entertainment destination for locals and ethnic communities during holidays and breaks. Additionally, it attracts tourists from both within the country and neighboring regions. Soaking in the U Va Hot Spring is believed to treat skin diseases, aid digestion, and promote blood circulation.

8. Muong Phang Cherry Blossom Garden
From Dien Bien Phu City, head towards Pa Khoang Lake for about 20 kilometers, then take a 10-minute boat ride to reach the Muong Phang Cherry Blossom Garden. From a distance, visitors can already see a vast area covered in blooming cherry blossoms. Thousands of cherry trees, including over 50 large Higan Sakura trees, are in full bloom, enchanting every onlooker.
There is no other place in Vietnam where tourists can experience a cherry blossom garden as breathtaking as this. The land of Muong Phang is a paradise for temperate flowers, offering perfect soil and climate conditions that create a stunning cherry blossom garden, captivating everyone who visits.
As a gentle breeze blows, the cherry petals flutter in the air. Visitors can easily catch the soft, delicate petals in their hands. This is the perfect moment to take photos and create unforgettable memories in such a rare, beautiful setting. When visiting the Muong Phang Cherry Blossom Garden, it's recommended to bring a camera or a phone with a good camera and wear beautiful outfits to capture the most stunning photos.


9. Highland Market in Dien Bien
When visiting Dien Bien, one should not miss the unique cultural experience of the highland markets, known as cho phien. At these markets in Tua Chua district, visitors won't encounter aggressive sales pitches, but rather, they will see genuine faces of local ethnic people dressed in vibrant traditional clothing. They come to the market not just for trading, but to enjoy the lively atmosphere and interact with visitors.
Tua Chua has three main markets: Muong Bang, Xa Nhe, and Ta Sin Thang. Amid the hustle and bustle of the cho phien, couples have found love over time. Young men and women exchange tunes on leaf and mouth organs, playing their hearts out to express affection, while gifting each other with bracelets and mirrors as tokens of love. Many couples who first met at these spring markets have gone on to become husband and wife.
At the highland markets of Dien Bien, visitors can indulge in local delicacies like traditional rice dishes, grilled meats, fish, sticky rice, and bánh dày. You'll also immerse yourself in cultural performances, folk songs, and dances from the local ethnic groups. In addition, you can admire the agricultural tools and ethnic musical instruments that the local people use. At the highland markets in Dien Bien, you will experience not only the beauty of the region but also the warmth and hospitality of its people.


10. Historic Site of Dien Bien Phu Battlefield
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Site includes the museum and the victory monument, the A1, C1, C2, and D1 hills, A1 Martyrs' Cemetery, General De Castris' bunker, Muong Thanh bridge and airport, the Hong Cum and Him Lam positions, and the command center of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Visiting this site takes you back in time to the heroic days of the war for independence against the French.
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument features three soldiers standing with their backs to each other, holding a Thai child, with a flag of victory at the top. The statue stands 16.6 meters tall, made of brass with a concrete and steel core, and weighs 220 tons. The pedestal is 3.6 meters high, constructed from reinforced concrete and adorned with artistic stonework. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take in a panoramic view of the entire Dien Bien Phu city from the statue, as it is situated atop D1 Hill.
A1 Martyrs' Cemetery is the final resting place for 644 soldiers who gave their lives during the Dien Bien Phu campaign, most of whom are unnamed, with only four graves dedicated to heroes: To Vinh Dien, Phan Dinh Giot, Be Van Dan, and Tran Can. The cemetery is serene, surrounded by fresh air and a peaceful, beautiful environment.
The De Castris Command Bunker is located in the heart of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold, on the Muong Thanh plain in Dien Bien province. The structure of the bunker and its interior layout remain unchanged. The bunker is surrounded by a defensive perimeter with barbed wire and four tanks. It measures 20 meters in length and 8 meters in width, and it contains four rooms used for both living and working purposes.


11. Pa Khoang Lake
Pa Khoang Lake is often described as a jade-like gem, nestled in the mountainous beauty of the Northwest, making it a must-visit destination in Dien Bien. Located in Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien district, approximately 20 km from Dien Bien Phu city, the name 'Pa Khoang' in the Thai language translates to 'bamboo forest.' The lake boasts rich biodiversity and breathtaking natural beauty, with its crystal-clear waters surrounded by vast forests. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities here, including boat rides on the lake, camping, picnicking by the shore, and the annual Pa Khoang cherry blossom festival.
In winter, Pa Khoang Lake is shrouded in mist, creating an ethereal atmosphere, with distant mountain ranges and quaint houses peeking through the fog. The summer months offer a refreshing climate, with cool, gentle breezes from the south. This idyllic setting is a peaceful and enchanting landscape. In the surrounding area, there are Thai and Kho Mu ethnic villages that have preserved the unique customs and traditions of the Northwest region.


12. Hua Pe Hot Spring
Hua Pe Hot Spring is located in Thanh Luong commune, Dien Bien district, about 5 km northwest of Dien Bien Phu city center. Surrounded by majestic mountains and forests, this natural hot spring offers a unique and beautiful setting. The water temperature here consistently reaches around 60°C and is rich in beneficial minerals. After being tested by the Institute of Medicine, the water has been found to be safe and highly beneficial for health, making it a popular destination for relaxation and therapeutic purposes.
A visit to Hua Pe Hot Spring offers a refreshing experience unlike any other. From deep within the mountains, hot mineral water flows year-round into the Nậm Pe stream. It is said that while many hot springs exist, only the mineral water here is pure enough to drink. The facility includes a water reservoir, two large swimming pools, several smaller pools, and a range of other services designed to enhance your experience.
