With its favorable geographical location, during the 17th and 18th centuries, Hoi An was a bustling international trading port, where goods were traded and exchanged by merchant ships from Japan, China, and Western countries. Moreover, it also bore traces of the Champa trading port or was often mentioned along the maritime Silk Road. However, around the 19th century, when waterway transportation here was no longer convenient, the once bustling port of Hoi An declined, making way for Da Nang, which was being developed by the French. During the two world wars and the urbanization process, fortunately, Hoi An was not destroyed and still retains its unique architecture. Today, it has become a highly attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.
