Batman is forced to make a daring, pitiful decision to keep the city from collapsing into chaos, that is, 'either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.'
To portray this Joker, actor Heath Ledger had to immerse himself for months in a room, using sleeping pills... leading to his death shortly thereafter. To honor the short-lived talented actor's contribution to cinema as an immortal mad Joker, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film also won another Oscar for the sound editing category.

11. Watchmen (The Watchful Ones)
For DC Comics fans, Watchmen is arguably the best adaptation. Adapted from the famous comic of the same name created by Alan Moore, Watchmen was considered unadaptable before its release, with Alan Moore even pessimistically declaring that the Watchmen film would have nothing to do with him. However, director Zack Snyder turned Watchmen from a comic book into the greatest DC Comics adaptation of all time.
The film Watchmen is set in the American society of the 1980s, amidst the Cold War with the Soviet Union and the imminent threat of nuclear war. Thanks to the assistance of superhero groups like the Minute Men before and the Watchmen later, especially Manhattan - a physicist who had an accident in the laboratory giving him atomic control powers, making him god-like, America won the Vietnam War.
However, later on, the superheroes faced public opposition: 'Who watches the Watchmen?' and the Watchmen group was forced to disband. Manhattan became the living weapon that made the Soviet Union hesitant, protected and closely monitored by the government, while other members of the group lived their own lives.
As the doomsday clock approaches midnight and war is about to break out, assassinations of former members of the Minute Men and Watchmen suddenly occur. Rorschach - a member of the Watchmen still active and wanted by the police, realizes this and tries to warn everyone, but no one believes him. Gradually, the sinister plan becomes clearer, and Rorschach and another member of the Watchmen, Nite Owl, find the mastermind behind it all but cannot stop him.
It is a dark, profound, and sinister yet lofty plan for political purposes that leaves everyone astonished. The film was criticized for its heavy-handed fight scenes, bloody violence, and political ideologies, but that is exactly what Alan Moore wanted to convey: the social and political landscape of America during the Cold War.
