Another spine-chilling anime is Hell Girl. At midnight, a mysterious website appears. If you enter the name of your enemy, a girl from hell—Enma Ai, also known as Jigoku Shoujo—will appear. She, along with her helpers, will drag your enemy down to Hell.
However, revenge comes with a price. By choosing this method of retribution, you also condemn the soul of your enemy to Hell after their death. In the past, Ai granted the wishes of those who sought vengeance by fulfilling the curses hung on a tree. But as the Internet grew, the way people contacted Ai evolved, and the Hell Correspondence website became a haunting nightmare for many.
Each episode tells the story of a main character who shares their personal injustice. When a ring of fire appears on a person, it means that Ai has helped them send their enemy to Hell, and they will never be able to send anyone else there. Upon their own death, their soul will also be claimed by Hell.

Tokyo Ghoul explores the blurred lines between good and evil, as Ken, the ghouls, and even law enforcement are portrayed in morally ambiguous lights. Death Note is a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The story follows Yagami Light, a high school student with the intellect of a genius, who stumbles upon a mysterious notebook from the underworld called the "Death Note"—a possession of the death god Ryuk.
"The person whose name is written in this note shall die. The note will not take effect unless the writer has the face of the person in their mind when writing the name. Therefore, people with the same name will not be affected." - Death Note
If you were granted the power to end someone's life by writing their name, how would you use it? Would it be for the greater good or for your own benefit? These moral dilemmas are explored in Death Note, one of the most talked-about anime series. The adventure follows Light Yagami, a brilliant honor student with a bright future ahead of him.
One day, Light finds the Death Note and quickly discovers its ability to kill anyone whose name is written in it. Initially, he targets criminals, but his actions take a dark turn as he grows hungry for power. Light becomes more selfish, seeing himself as a god, and the cat-and-mouse game begins with L, a famous detective who is determined to catch the murderer. Despite being a detective story, Death Note stands out as a psychological thriller, not your typical horror anime. Though not purely horror, it’s filled with action, suspense, and psychological manipulation that will leave viewers questioning the meaning of existence as they unravel the mystery.

12. High School of the Dead
High School of the Dead is a manga series written by Daisuke Satō and illustrated by Shōji Satō. The story follows a group of high school students caught in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
While The Walking Dead remains one of the most iconic zombie franchises, High School of the Dead offers its own unique take on the genre, making it a worthy addition to this list. A viral outbreak called "The Outbreak" spreads across Japan, turning people into zombies while a group of students struggles to survive. The setup may seem typical, especially with the usual anime characters, but there’s more to this story than meets the eye.
High School of the Dead raises questions about morality, with unexpected character developments and thrilling action sequences. The pandemic's backstory is intriguing, though the anime is infamous for its fanservice and "ecchi" moments, making it less appropriate for all audiences. However, even if you’re not a fan of such anime subgenres, it may surprise you with its exciting and gruesome tale.
Sadly, we may never see an ending, as the author, Daisuke Satō, passed away this year. His work will never be forgotten, serving as a remarkable example of a zombie anime done right for years to come.
It's a must-watch for fans of zombie horror anime!

However, he soon uncovers a series of brutal murders in the village, and things take a darker turn when he discovers that his closest friends are somehow involved in these horrific killings. The incessant cries of cicadas seem to eerily warn him of the horrors to come. As the tension builds, viewers will be on the edge of their seats, especially during the anime's intense climactic moments.
This anime is based on a horror game of the same name, and the level of terror is certainly not for the faint of heart. The chilling plot twists and nerve-wracking suspense can't be fully captured in words—it's something you must watch and experience. For those with weak constitutions, easily frightened, or under the age of 16, it's best to steer clear of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. If you want to heighten the experience, turn off the lights, close the door, and put on headphones to immerse yourself. Or, grab some friends and enjoy the thrill together!

14. Corpse Party
If you have a history of heart problems, easily get frightened, or aren't fond of horror, this anime is definitely not for you. Corpse Party is a terrifying tale set in a dilapidated elementary school, once known as Heavenly Host, which has been the site of numerous disappearances and murders of both staff and students. Over time, the school’s grim past was all but forgotten until a new institution, Kisaragi Academy, was built on the very site of the school’s ruins.
One fateful night, a group of Kisaragi students, gathered to tell ghost stories, are suddenly transported to another dimension by an earthquake. This new reality is the very same place where Heavenly Host exists, still haunted by the vengeful spirits of the murdered children. The Kisaragi students must now find their way back to safety while struggling to survive against the terrifying forces that haunt the school.
The eerie and intense chase scenes, paired with the spine-chilling horror, are sure to leave viewers on edge. Corpse Party has become a favorite for those who enjoy strong psychological horror. Watching this alone at night? Be prepared for an experience that might just haunt you. It’s certainly one of the most disturbing anime I’ve ever encountered. Enjoy if you dare!

The eerie, spine-tingling stories will have you on the edge of your seat, making your skin crawl with fear. Prepare for a thrilling ride with this anime, as it promises plenty of hair-raising moments.
