The total height of the monument is 85 meters with the sword part being 33 meters high and the mother's body being 52 meters high. The Mother Motherland Monument is placed on a small 2-meter-high pedestal, which in turn sits on a larger 16-meter-high pedestal buried in the ground. The statue is not 'glued' to the pedestal but stands firm only through the large weight and friction between the statue and the pedestal. The statue's weight reaches about 8,000 tons. From the foot of the hill to the statue, visitors must climb 200 steps symbolizing 200 days of fighting to defend and liberate the city of Stalingrad.
To build the statue (excluding the pedestal), about 5,500 tons of concrete and 2,400 tons of metal materials were mobilized. The thickness of the outer layer of concrete surrounding the statue is only about 25–30 cm. Inside the statue is a structure consisting of many hollow compartments, chambers, similar to a building. The structural integrity is maintained by 99 tensioned steel cables.
The sword in the right hand of the statue originally weighed 14 tons and was made of stainless steel and titanium. However, the excessive mass along with the strong wind impact (caused by its large size) negatively affected the overall stability of the statue. Moreover, deformation in the structure of the sword caused by the displacement of titanium plates also produced many unpleasant sounds for those around.
Therefore, during the restoration in 1972, a new sword made of phlo steel was placed to replace the old sword. The blade of the new sword also had many holes to reduce wind pressure. In the restoration in 1986, the concrete reinforcement steel components of the statue were further reinforced according to the recommendation of the group of experts from the Institute of Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Research led by R. L. Serykh.
