1. Father's Luffa Gourd Vine - Model 1
2. Our Home Luffa Gourd Trellis - Model 3
My hometown lies in a rural area, quite far from the bustling urban areas. It's economically modest but offers a peaceful and friendly environment. Despite the lack of luxurious items, the local cuisine, especially featuring fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables, is unmatched. One of the highlights of my hometown is the variety of agricultural products, particularly the luffa fruit.
Luffa is a type of climbing plant, easy to grow and yields plenty of fruits. In my hometown, my parents and neighbors all grow one or two luffa trellises in their gardens. To ensure the healthy growth and abundant fruiting of luffa plants, everyone prepares trellises made of bamboo or wood for them to climb and develop. Without proper support, the soft stems of luffa plants cannot thrive like mango or orange trees. Apart from trellises, people in my hometown also grow luffa near tall trees like lychee or cotton, or near fences and walls. In these spots, luffa plants can still climb and flourish without the need for extensive trellising efforts. However, harvesting luffa fruits in these conditions is more challenging compared to growing them on trellises.
Luffa plants have soft and tiny stems, initially as small as a rice grain, but they can grow very long and cling to the trellis. The leaves of luffa plants are heart-shaped, with prominent veins. These leaves are also used by locals to wipe off jackfruit resin because they are effective in removing the sticky substance, making jackfruit flesh fragrant, delicious, and cleaner. Another essential part of the luffa plant is its flowers, especially those of the aromatic variety. Besides the fruits, luffa flowers are also harvested by many for cooking soups. However, the most valuable aspect of luffa plants is their fruits. Luffa fruits grow from the flowers and mature to the size of a wrist.
These luffa fruits are used to make delicious soups, especially the crab soup. This dish is beloved by me and everyone in my family, especially during the summer when it becomes even more delightful. Although luffa fruits are considered humble, they can be processed into incredibly tasty dishes. Luffa plants are commonly grown in all rural areas across Vietnam, although they may not have high economic value, they are highly valued in daily life and in the daily diet of the people.
2. Our Family's Luffa Trellis - Model 2
Our home has a small garden plot where my parents grow various vegetables and fruit trees with limited space. Despite its size, the garden is a gathering place for many types of plants my parents cultivate. From seasonal vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, and corn to fruit trees like mangoes, guavas, my favorite remains the luffa trellis my parents often plant at the beginning of summer. Luffa is a small but fragrant and delicious fruit. Because of this, luffa often attracts bees and butterflies. Without careful protection, these lovely luffa fruits can easily be damaged by bees. When I was young, my mother used to say: 'Sunny days are good for cucumbers, rainy days are good for luffas.' In the early days of summer, my father would select seeds from the ripest luffas of previous years and sow them in soft, moist soil to promote quick growth. He would also use small pieces of bamboo to create fences around the luffa plants to prevent chickens from digging or mischievous dogs from damaging the young plants. With my father's care, the small luffa plants quickly emerged from the soil and reached for the first rays of sunlight. They grew rapidly compared to other plants. Before we knew it, the small luffa plants began to grow long tendrils of green, gradually wrapping around nearby branches. During this time, my father would add more trellises above to support the vines as they climbed and developed. The luffa trellis stands as tall as my father, planted at the entrance to the garden. He constructed four iron rods at each corner like sturdy pillars. Above, small pieces of bamboo were carefully arranged into small squares to allow the luffa vines to climb. Day by day, the green tendrils thrived, firmly gripping the trellis. Above, the flowers began to bloom, shining golden like the sun, their fragrance attracting honeybees and fluttering butterflies. Just a few days after the flowers bloomed, tiny luffa fruits began to emerge from the buds. These small fruits grew quickly, my mother even warned me not to touch or poke the luffas, as it would cause them to wither and fail to develop. So, during those times, I could only admire them from a distance and eagerly await their growth into large, elongated fruits. When young, luffas still have remnants of brown flowers underneath. Later, these remnants disappear as they grow larger and longer. Outside, a layer of fine, waterproof fuzz covers them. This is the time when they require the most protection because if stung by bees, they will be completely ruined and inedible. As the luffa fruits grow larger, their color deepens, indicating ripeness. If left on the vine for too long, they will become old and dry, with thick, inedible skins, only suitable for scrubbing dishes or drying the seeds for planting in the following years. Luffas are a versatile fruit. Not only can they be stir-fried with meat, but they can also be used in crab soup with green beans and spinach, which is very delicious. They also carry the love of our parents for us, so for me, the luffa trellis is also a beautiful childhood memory.
4. Grandparents' Bottle Gourd Trellis - Model 2
Among the various plants in our home garden, the one that impresses me the most is the bottle gourd vine because it is a climbing vine that produces bottle gourds with numerous thorns, unlike many other plants in our garden.
The bottle gourd, also known as 'moc thiet' in Vietnamese, is a perennial climbing vine, a unique species with separate male and female plants. Our bottle gourd vine, like many others, grows vigorously, reaching lengths of up to 15 meters. I'm particularly impressed by the bottle gourd leaves, which are smooth and shiny, resembling duck feet. The lush green leaves quickly spread across the trellis my father built for the bottle gourd vine to climb.
Similar to other bottle gourd plants, our vine also produces pale yellow flowers, which are equally beautiful. It's not until the winter that the fruits ripen. People harvest bottle gourds to make sticky rice, and on a cold winter day, there's nothing better than enjoying the fragrant and delicious taste of bottle gourd sticky rice. Moreover, bottle gourds have many health benefits. The round bottle gourds, when unripe, have a green color like the leaves, and when ripe, they turn orange-red, with a diameter of 15–20 cm. The skin of our bottle gourds is also covered in dense thorns. Each fruit usually contains six segments. The flesh of the bottle gourd is a beautiful orange-red color, and the dark brown seeds are impressively sculpted.
I deeply cherish our bottle gourd vine because it provides ripe, fragrant, and delicious fruits that are rich in nutrients for our bodies.
5. Grandparents' Momordica Trellis - Model 1
Our house has a variety of climbing plants including squash, pumpkin, and gourd, but my favorite is the gac trellis that my dad has taken care of and planted right behind our house.
The frame of my dad's gac trellis is meticulously made, crafted from five-meter-long bamboo poles, two meters wide. Just the other day, the gac plant seemed so small. But only a few days later, its tendrils seemed to have spread all over the trellis. The gac vines seem larger and definitely more robust compared to other vines of the same type like gourds or pumpkins... The gac vine that was just about five spans long yesterday morning has now stretched to ten spans, tightly winding around the trellis. It's as if I've witnessed something magical. Just a short while later, a vibrant green hue has covered the entire surface of the trellis.
As the gac plant has climbed all over the trellis, it has begun to flower. The gac flowers are a moonlight white, inviting bees and butterflies to come for nectar. Then, the tiny gac fruits begin to shoot out, as if eager to greet the new day. The initial gac fruits are small, resembling lime, and are securely enclosed. Our gac trellis produces abundant fruit, and everyone enjoys admiring these perfectly round gac fruits. The exterior of the gac fruit is covered in countless sharp thorns, and if one accidentally touches them, it can be quite painful; even peeling the gac requires caution. When the gac is ripe, it can be left for a long time, and people often use it to make sticky rice. Gac sticky rice is known as one of our traditional dishes. Its aroma is delightful, and its bright red color is said to bring good luck when we offer it as an offering.
I really love our gac plant, and occasionally, I go out to the garden with my dad to fertilize the soil and combat pests to ensure its healthy growth and abundant, fragrant fruits.
8. Pumpkin Trellis in the Countryside - Sample 3
Pumpkin, my dear, embrace squash too
Though different in kind, on the same trellis they grew.
The above folk verse reminds me of my uncle's squash trellis in the countryside. Last school year, I achieved excellent academic results. My parents let me visit my uncle in the countryside for a month, and I had the opportunity to observe that cool green squash trellis.
The squash stems aren't thick, just as wide as a big toe, yet they grow vigorously. From four poles, four squash plants sprouted. They wrapped around the poles and climbed upwards. At the top, a square-shaped bamboo trellis was erected, laden with squash and intertwined vines.
Squash belongs to the climbing plant family. They're like Western cowboys adept at lassoing ropes. The squash vines are as flexible as kite strings. The more the vines twist, the farther the squash stems crawl. The squash leaves are fan-shaped and lush green, adorned with numerous hairs.
The dangling squash fruits on the trellis look adorable. They resemble nature's wine bottles. My uncle often cooks squash soup with shrimp or duck eggs. It tastes sweet and refreshing.
I really like my uncle's squash trellis. It provides shade and delicious fruits.

13. Grapevine with Fruit Bunches - Model 3
In our family garden, my father has planted many fruit-bearing trees such as oranges, apples, mangoes, but there's only one vine, and that's the grapevine. I also hold a special affection for the grapevine.
Grapes are known as juicy fruits taken from climbing vine plants belonging to the grape genus. I've observed in our grapevine that the grapes grow in clusters, pleasing to the eye, with some clusters having over 100 grapes, but my father mentioned that there are vineyards with clusters of up to 300 grapes. I was surprised to hear this from my father, but that's indeed the truth. The grapes we grow have a red hue when ripe, and when unripe, they're simply green.
Ripe grapes can be eaten fresh or dried to make raisins. Especially during the Lunar New Year season, many people come to inquire about buying grapes to dry into raisins. Dried grapes are easy to eat, with a delicious aroma, perfect for serving during Tet when guests arrive. Additionally, grapes are used to produce various products like wine, grape jelly, fruit juice, grape syrup, and more.
However, my father also told me that wild grape varieties are considered a nuisance weed causing many troubles for humans. This is because they overshadow other plant species with their rapid growth rate. Although we only have one grapevine at home, it also grows rapidly, quickly occupying a large area in our garden.
I also hold a deep affection for the grapevine because it not only provides additional income for our family but also supplies delicious and nutritious grapes for humans.
14. Heavenly Bamboo Trellis in Our Home - Model 3
In our small backyard, my mother has utilized it to grow fresh vegetables to supply our family. Although the garden is small, we have a variety of vegetables. But what I love most is the trellis of Chinese spinach growing in front of our house.
This Chinese spinach trellis has been planted by my parents for a long time. Since I was born, the green leaves have completely covered the trellis. The green leaves, or rather the Chinese spinach, are intertwined to form a fresh and vibrant green cloth, like a light filter, a sunshade in the blazing summer.
The stems of the Chinese spinach trellis are very special, they are formed by tightly intertwining many slender stems together. Many small stems, when tightly twisted together, form an extremely flexible stem that is resilient and difficult to topple over by the sun, rainstorms, or the obstacles that nature brings. Looking at those green stems, I feel like they resemble the beanstalk of Jack in the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' The fresh and cool green Chinese spinach leaves have a shape similar to a racing heart welcoming the sunlight. Big leaves, small leaves, young leaves, old leaves, all like a family of Chinese spinach. But the most beautiful are undoubtedly the Chinese spinach flowers - flowers with special colors, extremely pleasing to the eye. The Chinese spinach flowers are light green, mixed with white. The closer to the flower cluster, the clearer the white color becomes. The long, thin petals, when blooming, reveal small and beautiful stamens inside. The Chinese spinach flowers bloom in clusters, under the sun, they seem to have warm lemon hues, from a distance, they look extremely beautiful.
The wonderful thing is, both the Chinese spinach leaves and flowers are edible. Cleaned flower clusters, stir-fried with beef, will make the beef sweeter and tastier. That's why I love eating this type of vegetable. Every day, before going to school, I water those little beautiful stems to make the flower trellis fresher, more beautiful, and more charming.
I love our Chinese spinach flower trellis very much, it not only provides food for my family but also contributes to enhancing the beauty of our home.
15. Trellis of Chinese Spinach at Our Home - Model 2
Our garden has a beautiful Chinese spinach flower trellis. The Chinese spinach flowers are also very fragrant, and everyone who comes to our house praises this Chinese spinach flower trellis.
The Chinese spinach trellis was planted by me and my mother a year ago. The plants grew very quickly. My mother erected several plants arranged in a rectangular shape for the vines to climb up and intertwine like a green canopy, providing shade from the sun and shelter from the rain, looking truly beautiful. The small green leaves of the Chinese spinach cover the trellis my mother erected. The Chinese spinach flowers are very beautiful, with small yellow flowers slightly mixed with white arranged in clusters to beautify the Chinese spinach trellis. The Chinese spinach flowers are also very fragrant; sometimes when the wind blows, the fragrance spreads far and wide, letting everyone who passes by know that there is a Chinese spinach flower trellis in our house. The Chinese spinach flowers are also very useful and are used in dishes to make them tastier and more nutritious. My mother often uses Chinese spinach flowers to cook soup to keep us cool or stir-fries them with buffalo meat or beef.
So I really like our Chinese spinach flower trellis. It not only provides shade for me, beautifies our garden, but also contributes to making delicious dishes. I promise to take care of it every day to keep the plants green and vibrant and produce more flowers.
16. Paper Flower Trellis - Model 2
For me, perhaps my dear home is the most beautiful, unmatched by any other scenery. It's beautiful because of the abundant love of its members, because of the memories filled throughout life. My home - our nest is also beautiful because of the clever decorations. Among them, the paper flower trellis has made the simple beauty of our countryside home more prominent, peaceful, and serene.
The paper flower trellis is planted at the entrance gate. According to my grandfather, he planted it with his own hands. To this day, the plant is almost ten years old. It grows densely covering a corner of the yard, about 5 to 6 meters tall. My grandfather built a large trellis for the vine to climb up, providing cool shade for a large open area. Every summer afternoon, under the shade of the paper flower trellis, we children play and frolic together joyfully.
The roots of the plant penetrate deep into the soil, absorbing nutrients to nurture the plant. The trunk of the paper flower is not too big, just the size of an adult's wrist. It wears a brown coat, not rough but rather smooth. The branches of the plant grow horizontally along the trellis, then extend in all directions to embrace the sun and wind. As they grow taller, the branches become smaller and gradually turn deep red. Numerous sharp thorns grow there, like effective weapons to protect the beauty of an elegant flower. The paper flower leaves grow densely. They are not as large as banana leaves or jackfruit leaves but rather small like cool green hearts. On the background of vibrant green leaves is a beautiful carpet of paper flowers. Our paper flower plant has two colors: white and pink. The paper flower petals are thin and delicate, almost translucent. Each paper flower consists of three petals overlapping to hide the bright yellow stamen. White paper flowers are pure white like small lanterns amidst the verdant green. The pink flowers harmonize perfectly with the white, a beauty full of femininity. Whenever a breeze blows, a few flowers detach from the branches, gently swaying with the gentle wind and gently falling to the ground.
To keep the plant always lush, it requires the caring hands of humans. Every evening, I also help my grandfather carry water to water the plant. Occasionally, we fertilize it to ensure it has enough nutrients. I and everyone in the house value and love the paper flower trellis. Therefore, I always remind myself to take good care of it so that the paper flower trellis will continue to adorn our home forever.

19. Paper Flower Trellis - Model 3
Each type of flower captivates us with its unique features. Peach blossoms charm us with their delicate pink petals, mentioning them brings to mind the Northern Tet holiday, while mentioning golden apricot trees reminds people of the Southern Tet,... And for me, I'm very impressed and fascinated by the paper flower trellis. My house also has a paper flower trellis planted by my father's own hands.
That paper flower trellis has been meticulously cared for and cultivated by my father. He meticulously prepared the trellis and painstakingly nurtured it to produce a paper flower trellis about two meters tall, which everyone who visits our house admires my father's skillful hands and the trellis looks really outstanding, eye-catching, and beautiful. I observed that the trunk of the plant is brown, shiny, and quite firm. From that trunk, there are many branches climbing up. The flower leaves are dark green, heart-shaped. The most impressive thing is the paper flowers, very thin and durable, just like its characteristic name. My paper flowers are deep pink, mingling with the other green leaves to create a very impressive color palette. Looking from a close distance, the paper flower trellis looks like a giant flower carpet swaying in the sun, playing and teasing with the wind. To me, that paper flower trellis looks very much like a young girl wearing a very prominent, charming, and graceful floral dress! Especially on moonlit nights or sunny days, the moonlight or sunlight shining through the gaps in the leaves creates shadows on the ground, making our yard look truly magical! Whenever there is a breeze, those paper flowers sway, falling lightly to the ground, making our yard seem like it's wearing a new dress!
Under that paper flower trellis, my sisters and I have played and frolicked together. Under that trellis, my mother has told us countless fairy tales. The falling flower petals on my mother's hair, carrying the imprint of my father's hands, are etched into my mind, into my heart. The paper flower trellis is intertwined with my childhood and even beyond. I will always love the paper flower trellis that my father took care of. Paper flowers will always be the flowers I love. When I grow up, I will personally plant a paper flower trellis and take care of it myself.
