Ganoderma has long been used in traditional medicine. In ancient texts like the "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing", it was regarded as superior to ginseng. In the "Compendium of Materia Medica", it is considered a precious medicine that protects the liver, detoxifies the body, strengthens the heart, enhances brain function, clears phlegm, promotes urination, and improves digestion. Numerous studies have identified key compounds and pharmacological effects in Ganoderma, including Germanium, ganoderic acid, cordycepin, adenosine, and beta-D-glucan—remarkably, Ganoderma contains 5-8 times more Germanium than ginseng.
Research in Vietnam has found that Ganoderma contains 21 essential trace elements necessary for the body’s metabolism, such as copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium. It also contains over 400 active compounds, including polysaccharides like Beta-D-Glucan, FA, F1, F1-1a, D-6, A, B, C-2, D, G-A, G-Z, Ge-cmanium (6000 parts per million, 18 times higher than ginseng’s 325 ppm), antioxidants (around 24,000 I.U.), adenosine, B vitamins, vitamin C, minerals, enzymes, and essential fatty acids.
Among all Ganoderma species, the red variety (Hồng Chi) is the most powerful and rarest, offering numerous benefits over other types, such as:

- Treating stomach and duodenal diseases
- Managing diabetes
- Treating liver diseases, chronic hepatitis, fatty liver, kidney inflammation, and bronchitis
- Fighting aging, providing antioxidant benefits, neutralizing free radicals, rejuvenating the body, and increasing longevity
Today, Ganoderma is known for its Germanium content, which improves oxygen absorption by cells, and its polysaccharides, which boost immunity, strengthen the liver, and kill cancer cells. Ganoderma is now widely cultivated, but its quality cannot match that of wild-grown mushrooms. Due to its high nutritional value and numerous health benefits, it is rare and expensive, with prices ranging from 800,000 to over 5,000,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the variety (Red, Black, White, Yellow, Purple) and origin (Vietnam, Korea, etc.). Despite the high cost, Ganoderma remains highly sought after for its powerful health benefits.

19. Shiitake Mushroom
Shiitake mushrooms, also known as "Dong Ko" mushrooms, are known for their delightful aroma and small, umbrella-shaped caps. When fully matured, they turn a rich dark brown color and are often regarded as a "superfood" with numerous health benefits.

Moreover, Shiitakes contain over 30 types of enzymes that assist the body in digesting food and synthesizing essential substances, as well as amino acids that provide vital minerals in protein form—substances that the body cannot produce on its own.
Recently, scientists have extracted two key compounds, Lentinan and Lentinula Edodes mycelium (LEM), from Shiitake mushrooms. These compounds have been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Here are some key benefits of Shiitake mushrooms:
- Detoxifies and protects the liver: The polysaccharides in Shiitakes activate immune cells, boosting the growth and development of lymphocytes and stimulating T and B lymphocytes, helping detoxify the body.
- Boosts the immune system: Shiitake mushrooms have been scientifically proven to enhance the body's immune system, making it more effective at fighting off natural diseases.
- Prevents cancer: Shiitake mushrooms contain a unique compound called AHCC, a mixture of amino acids, polysaccharides, and minerals, which enhances the immune system by increasing the number of cells that fight infections and prevent tumor growth.
- Vital for chemotherapy patients: A study in Japan found that cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy saw enhanced treatment effectiveness, improved survival rates, and slowed cancer progression when supplemented with Lentinan. Lentinan is thus used as an adjunct treatment in chemotherapy.
- Improves kidney and sexual health: Shiitake mushrooms stimulate digestion and are beneficial for people experiencing sexual dysfunction, lower back pain, or poor appetite.
- Shiitakes are also considered a nutritious food for individuals suffering from iron-deficiency anemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, lipid imbalances, and malnutrition in children.
Shiitake mushrooms are not only delicious but also packed with nutritional value and medicinal properties, making them suitable for all ages. However, it's advised not to consume more than 50 grams per day to avoid bloating, indigestion, or overconsumption of nutrients that might harm your health.
Currently, 1kg of Shiitake mushrooms is sold for around 350,000 to 400,000 VND, depending on whether they are fresh or dried, and whether they are sold whole or strung together. Given that 50 grams a day is sufficient for a week of consumption, 1 kg lasts a long time, making it an affordable and healthy choice for many.

Oyster mushrooms, also known as Abalone mushrooms, are originally from Germany. They grow on the trunks of decaying or weakened trees to absorb nutrients. Lacking chlorophyll, they take on an ivory color similar to oyster shells. Unable to synthesize food on their own, their nutrition comes entirely from the nutrients they absorb from their host tree, which is why oyster mushrooms are considered both highly nutritious and beneficial for health.
Oyster mushrooms are packed with a variety of nutrients, including proteins and vitamins. They contain 70-90% easily digestible protein, significantly higher than that found in other vegetables. Their carbohydrate content is also quite high, even surpassing beef, potatoes, and other vegetables (e.g., beef contains only 0.5mg/100g of carbohydrates). Although low in fat, oyster mushrooms are rich in essential minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, manganese, iron, and calcium. Additionally, they contain high levels of vitamins, including Vitamin B-complex (5.82mg/100g fresh) and Vitamin A (0.8mg/100g fresh), known for its anti-aging properties. Some other health benefits include:
- Anti-cancer: The presence of lovastatin in the caps and spores of the oyster mushroom contributes to its anti-cancer properties.
- Pharmacological studies have shown that pleutorin, a compound found in oyster mushrooms, has antibacterial effects against gram-positive bacteria and can fight cancer cells. Additionally, fresh mushrooms have been found to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- Parasite prevention: Fresh oyster mushrooms naturally release substances that combat roundworms and other parasites.
- Oyster mushrooms can also help lower blood pressure, prevent obesity, treat digestive issues, and detoxify the body.
As both a “clean vegetable” and “clean meat,” oyster mushrooms are an excellent choice for family meals, offering a delicious taste while promoting health and preventing dangerous diseases. At a reasonable price of around 60,000 VND per kilogram, they are affordable for many people.
