If you're an Intel enthusiast, here's why you should skip the 14th-gen processor and wait for the 15th-gen replacement.
Intel has unveiled its 14th-gen Intel Core processors - the latest addition to the Intel processor lineup on the cutting-edge 4nm Intel processing node. These chips are touted as Intel's best-performing, energy-efficient offerings, but many are disappointed with their performance.
So, if you're an Intel fan, here's why you should overlook the 14th-gen processor and anticipate the 15th-gen replacement.
1. Intel's 14th Gen Falls Short Compared to the 13th Gen
One of the reasons to upgrade your processor is because it provides a significant advantage over your current one. However, if you have a 13th-gen Intel processor, the latest 14th-gen chips don't bring a substantial advantage, especially if you're still using the same Core variant you currently have, such as the Intel Core i5 or i7.
While Intel's 14th generation boasts some advantages over the 12th-gen chip in terms of core count and maximum frequency, its sole edge over the 13th-gen lies in slightly faster maximum memory speed with DDR5 RAM.
2. 14th Gen i9 and i5 Processors, and 13th Gen Intel's, Share the Same Core Count
One way to measure performance improvement between processor generations is by looking at their core count. Generally, processor cores are the part of your computer responsible for reading and executing instructions.
So, the more cores you have, the faster your processor will run. Intel has taken a step further by integrating P and E cores into their chip for a powerful yet energy-efficient processor.
However, looking at the comparison chart between the 13th and 14th gen chips, you'll notice that the i9 and i5 processors have the same core count. Only the Intel Core i7-14700K sees an increase from 16 cores (8P + 8E) to 20 cores (8P + 12E).
3. 13th Gen Chips Offer a More Reasonable Price
While the 14th generation chips currently come with a higher price tag than their older counterparts, that's a point not up for debate. However, when comparing performance and cost differences, the 13th-gen Intel chips remain the perfect choice at this moment. They not only deliver impressive performance but also come at a very reasonable price. If you're weighing options for a new computer purchase, the 13th-gen chips are a much better choice than the 14th-gen.
