Forestry University was established on August 19, 1964, under Decision No. 127/CP dated August 19, 1964, by the Government Council based on the separation of the Faculty of Forestry and the Mechanization Division from the University of Agriculture in Hanoi (now the Vietnam National University of Agriculture).

Thai Nguyen University of Technology was established on August 19, 1965, under Decision No. 164/CP of the Government Council. As of now, the university's organizational apparatus has developed into 25 units, including 12 faculties and training centers with 37 specialized departments, 05 laboratories and practice workshops, 12 functional rooms and centers, 01 research institute, and 01 technology transfer and research results commercialization company.

Regarding the university's staff, there are 594 officials and employees, including 416 lecturers, of whom 78% hold postgraduate qualifications, 10% hold doctoral degrees, and 93% of lecturers are proficient in teaching theoretical subjects in a foreign language or have an English proficiency level above 450 TOEFL ITP.
