Guidelines for Composing
Topic: “Books extend before my eyes new horizons.” (Gorky)
Based on the outline in the textbook – p.140, we write short paragraphs elaborating on the points in the Body of the lesson as follows:
Part 1: Books are the miraculous creations of humanity.
a. Before writing existed, humans had oral traditions, but human civilization truly flourished with the advent of writing, especially when books emerged, recording and preserving all cultural values. Books are enigmatic entities in the realm of human creativity. They are essential for preserving and passing on our knowledge of the world, discoveries about the universe, humanity, as well as our thoughts, beliefs, and desires for future generations.
b. Books are repositories of human knowledge that have been discovered, selected, tested, and synthesized. They crystallize the most advanced thoughts of each era, the strongest aspirations, and the deepest emotions of humanity. Only what people feel compelled to express and transmit enters the realm of books. Books are the result of intellectual labor.
c. The impact of books is not confined by time and space. People today still eagerly rediscover pages written thousands of years ago, from mysterious drawings on clay tablets, ancient alphabets engraved on sheepskins, to hieroglyphics on bamboo slips… Up to this day, books are mass-produced using modern electronic printing machines. A person in a remote Asian village can read a book written by someone from a distant country in the Americas. It is not an exaggeration to say that books bring centuries and nations closer together.
Part 2: Books open up new horizons.
a. Each person lives within a certain space and time; human lifespan is finite, but the quest for knowledge is infinite. Since childhood, humans learn to read to access an infinite source of knowledge – books. Natural science books help the human mind explore the universe with its laws, the essence of objects, and natural phenomena around us. Social science books provide us with insights into community life in different countries with diverse economic, cultural, and historical characteristics…
b. Books provide us with knowledge about human life throughout different periods. We learn about the brutal world wars, poverty, and devastation of war through historical books. We also learn about primitive societies living off the land, hunting, and gathering through books. Indeed, books recreate objective reality through the world of imagination. Furthermore, through books, the thoughts, emotions, and cultural life of humanity are also depicted. Epic tales and legends enable us to understand the religious and human life of that era. Works like “The Tale of Kieu” and “Chinh Phu Ngam” make us understand the fate of women, the injustices of feudal society, and its cruelty…
c. Books help people explore their own culture. Through the accounts of historians and literary works, Vietnamese people learn about their country’s struggles against foreign invaders, efforts to defend the nation, and thousands of years of history. Also, through books, people explore themselves, nurture dreams, and foster aspirations. By reflecting on themselves within the treasury of human knowledge, people realize how limited their knowledge is amidst the ocean of knowledge. Consequently, books like “Seeds of the Soul” and “I’m Talented, You Are Too” somewhat inspire and encourage many courageous individuals to pursue their own dreams.
Part 3: The Right Attitude towards Books
Reading books brings many benefits. However, not everyone knows how to read books correctly. There are many types of books: good books, bad books, suitable books, and unsuitable books. Therefore, when reading books, the first thing is to know how to choose what to read. Know how to learn and follow the good things in books. Moreover, for students, learning only from textbooks is not enough; knowledge must also be acquired through practical experience.

Question 1 (page 141 Textbook Vietnamese Literature 10 Volume 2)
1. Books are the product of human civilization.
It must be said that, at a certain level of development, humans produce a special product: books. Before writing, humans may have had oral creations, but human civilization truly blossomed when writing emerged, especially when writing was used to record all cultural values. Those values are the experiences of production, social behavior, health care experiences for oneself and the community. They are other creations in terms of culture, literature, customs, beliefs, ... And later, they are scientific-technical innovations. Books help future generations learn, inherit from those who came before, help people in this country know the heart of people in other countries to learn, to progress together. Books contain civilization, are the product of civilization.
2. Books have the power to transcend time and space
The impact of books is not limited by time and space. People today still eagerly seek pages written thousands of years ago, from mysterious drawings on clay tablets, ancient letters that have become strange on sheepskins, pictorial characters on bamboo slips ... until today, books are mass-produced by modern electronic printing machines. A person living in a remote village in Asia can also read a book written by someone from a distant country in America. It can truly be said without exaggeration: with books, centuries and nations are brought closer together.
3. Books have opened up new horizons before our eyes! Indeed, when reading scientific books, we only know that beyond our beloved Earth is a vast universe. Modern scientific technologies in advanced countries are also written in books, not just science books but also many other genres such as literature books, social books, economic books, history books... They help us answer questions: Which mountain peak is the highest in the world? Why did the Egyptians embalm corpses? Can we see the Great Wall from the moon? Or what shape is the earth? Why does a light bulb shine?... Social books help us understand customs, population, and many strange things of a very small country or a continent. As for literature books, they make us find ourselves again, know our own thoughts. Through literary books, we feel a beautiful, pure emotion and also the suffering, happiness of people in different situations. Literary books always transform in a magical way, leading people from one work to another, helping people understand each other, their circumstances, and customs. They share the same deep feelings on every page of a book, more importantly, they can find themselves hidden here in the endless prose lines. People suddenly feel more romantic or more realistic.
