What he summoned, however, was a young boy, far from complete. He didn't even get a glimpse of the boy's face as the chaotic mass fell to the ground. Knowing something terrible had happened, he rushed to the village but was too late—the boy's village had been destroyed by the aftermath of the summoning ritual. Amidst the rubble, he heard the cries of a child, discovering a girl beside an ancient musical instrument. He brought her and the instrument to an orphanage, leaving them in the care of others, unable to forgive himself.
Lee Sin left the War Institute and journeyed to the Shojin Monastery to dedicate his life to repentance, vowing never to touch magic again. Many years later, hoping his death could atone for his actions, he self-immolated to resist Noxus's invasion of Ionia. Despite enduring weeks of agony, his actions paved the way for a battle where Ionia triumphed. After recovering, his eyes were completely burned.
The girl from Lee Sin's past, now at the orphanage, had grown into a 'Maven of the Strings' named Sona, with the same ancient musical instrument, but regrettably, she could no longer speak. During one of Sona's performances, though unseen, her music captivated him. Investigating, Lee Sin discovered Sona was the girl from his past, realizing he had a special connection with her. As they met more, Sona's feelings for him grew. Unable to deceive Sona, he decided to meet her and reveal the entire story.
