Nguyễn Văn Quyết is undoubtedly the first name on the list to replace Lê Công Vinh after the former national team captain retired. The 25-year-old forward has become the top choice of coach Hữu Thắng to partner with Công Vinh upfront. Evidence shows that in the 2016 AFF Cup, Văn Quyết started in 4 out of 5 matches for the Vietnamese national team and contributed 2 goals. Moreover, in 20 matches under coach Hữu Thắng, Văn Quyết is the second highest goal scorer after Lê Công Vinh with 7 goals. Impressive not only as a goal scorer, the forward playing for Hà Nội T&T also provided 5 assists. He often plays as a winger or a second striker. After 45 appearances for the Vietnamese national team, Văn Quyết has scored 11 goals. However, leading the attacking line remains a significant challenge for this 25-year-old player.

Limited playtime in a high-level football environment like J-League has affected Công Phượng's ball sense, which was once his strength. Nonetheless, training with high-caliber teammates at Mito Hollyhock has helped the 1995-born striker improve his physicality and ability to compete. If he gets regular playing time in the V-League next year, Công Phượng may regain his goal-scoring instinct. Then, he will once again be a strong candidate in Vietnam's forward line, a worthy successor to the legendary Lê Công Vinh.

Under coach Hữu Thắng, Văn Toàn has become a favorite asset on the right-wing for this 44-year-old strategist. His speedy and skillful wing plays have sharpened Vietnam's right flank. Personally, Văn Toàn has left his mark with seven goals for the national team, including 3 goals and 4 assists. However, it's worth emphasizing that apart from playing as a right midfielder, Văn Toàn has also showcased his talent as a genuine striker in his previous appearances for U19 and his current club, Hoàng Anh Gia Lai. In the 2016 V-League, the 20-year-old forward emerged as one of Hoàng Anh Gia Lai's top three goal scorers with 8 goals. However, to become a true center forward, Văn Toàn needs to improve his physicality and ability to hold the ball, alongside his already impressive speed and clever playing style.

4. Hà Đức Chinh

It would be premature to immediately hand opportunities to Hà Đức Chinh in the national team, but he could certainly become a long-term strategic backup option for Vietnamese football. In the U19 Vietnam team, Đức Chinh was always the number one choice as a center forward in Coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn's tactical scheme. Over two years playing for the youth team, the Phú Thọ-native player consistently topped the goal-scoring charts in campaigns such as the U19 Southeast Asian Championship and the U19 Asian Championship. Đức Chinh was also the player who scored a fantastic header to help U19 Vietnam secure a historic victory against U19 DPR Korea, the reigning runners-up of the tournament. From that triumph, Vietnamese young players seemed to gain immense motivation, full of excitement, and scripted a fairy tale at the U19 Asian Championship by reaching the semifinals and earning a ticket to the 2017 U20 World Cup.

Hà Đức Chinh has achieved certain successes in the colors of U19 Vietnam.

5. Mạc Hồng Quân (2 goals/9 matches)

Under coach Hữu Thắng, Mạc Hồng Quân was only called up once, but with his recent good form, this Vietnamese-Korean player could very well be given another chance by the Nghệ coach to return to the national team. In the 2016 V-League season, Mạc Hồng Quân played as a midfielder for Than Quảng Ninh. It's a position he feels suits him and one he was trained in during his time at Sparta Praha. However, he's not necessarily unfit for the center forward position. He scored 11 goals in 25 appearances for the U23 Vietnam team. Compared to the three candidates mentioned above, Mạc Hồng Quân may not possess the speed or skillful dribbling, but instead, this 24-year-old player has good physique and aerial ability. Standing at 1.80 meters tall, Hồng Quân could provide an advantage for Vietnam with his heading ability or by acting as a tactical pivot for the second line.

The Vietnamese-born player is gradually regaining form and is determined to make a comeback to represent the Vietnamese national team.
