Sipping a crafted cocktail and engaging in conversations with new acquaintances is the preferred way for many backpackers to embrace the nocturnal lifestyle in the historic streets of Hanoi. Unlike the common perception among Vietnamese patrons that bars are for stress relief, dancing, and alcohol indulgence, foreign visitors frequent bars not necessarily for dancing but often to listen to music, enjoy a few cocktails or beers, and socialize. Thus, the concept of Western bars signifies establishments managed by foreigners and favored by many international guests.
1. Rockstore

Rockstore can be considered a quintessential Western-style bar in the Old Quarter, managed by Olivier Waryn from Switzerland. Despite its recent opening in September 2013, the place quickly became a go-to spot for many tourists in Hanoi, thanks to its subtle decor and an open space adorned with a rock theme.
The two-story yellow building, designed in French architecture, houses the bar counter on the first floor, serving a variety of alcoholic beverages such as wine, cocktails, mocktails, and beer. The first floor also features a lounge for small groups. The second floor offers large lounge areas for larger groups, along with pool tables and shakers. The distinctive curved lamps are a standout feature of the venue.
While most bars operate from evening till night, Rockstore is open all day. However, it truly comes alive in the evening. On weekdays, the bar hosts DJ performances or live rock bands. In addition to drinks, the bar serves light Vietnamese snacks like bun cha and spring rolls.
2. Fat Cat Bar

Fat Cat Bar, managed by Olivier Waryn in collaboration with a French companion, offers a cozy blend of vibrant and laid-back lounge vibes. Despite its smaller size compared to Rockstore, Fat Cat is a haven for the 'keyboard sorcerer' – Olivier Waryn, who emphasizes an 'artistic menu'.
The harmonious fusion of lively and unique styles creates a comfortable ambiance at Fat Cat Bar. The clientele is mainly international guests who gather around the indoor bar or relax outside, sipping on a few beers and engaging in hours-long conversations. For those preferring a more laid-back experience, the stools in front of the porch provide a spot to enjoy a refreshing glass of lemonade priced at only 30,000 VND.
Fat Cat Bar regularly hosts themed music parties to add a touch of distinction. The preferred beverages here are beer and cocktails. If you want to order a signature drink, look no further than the Fatcat cocktail. The front porch stools are also a place where patrons can sit and enjoy a glass of lemonade for just 30,000 VND.
3. Finnegan’s Irish

The name Finnegan’s Irish seems to originate from the famous novel with the title 'Finnegans Wake' by Irish author James Joyce. Situated on the second floor of 32 Lương Ngọc Quyến, Finnegan’s Irish boasts a classic European design with brown and black leather and wood furnishings creating a warm atmosphere.
Finnegan’s Irish, although not overly spacious, maximizes light and space to create various cozy options for patrons. If solo, perch at the bar; if in a group, choose a suitable table, or else, order a beer and enjoy it on the balcony, soaking in the street view.
In addition to alcoholic beverages, Finnegan’s Irish also serves tea, coffee, and fast food. Particularly, the bar regularly hosts events tied to international football tournaments.
4. Funky. B

Funky B (formerly known as Funky Buddha) is a bar located at 2 Tạ Hiện, renowned for house, trance, and techno music genres. With diverse and unique music styles, it's a beloved spot for tourists and the foreign community residing in Vietnam.
Compared to many bars in the Old Quarter, Funky B boasts a relatively large space with two bars featuring distinct styles. The outside bar near the entrance has a more 'down-to-earth' feel, while the inside bar impresses with its stylishly adorned birdcage liquor shelves. If you're not into the lively atmosphere with DJ music inside, you can relax at the outside bar, sip on a few light drinks, and have cheerful conversations with friends.
5. Spy Bar

Spy Bar at 12A Nguyễn Hữu Huân boasts a design reminiscent of Finnegan’s Irish, yet visitors can discover unique and cozy touches here. The bar is relatively small, with few long seats for groups; instead, the focus is on tall stools clustered around the bar. You can also opt for seats on the second loft if you prefer a more private space.
Spy Bar primarily features live singing and musical performances. Additionally, every Friday night, mini game shows are organized here to liven up the atmosphere. The drinks here are praised by tourists as reasonably priced, with beer ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 VND per bottle, and coffee and tea priced at 15,000 to 20,000 VND per cup.
