The poet 'writes while lying down' Đỗ Trọng Khơi is a unique poet of modern Vietnamese literature. Misfortune due to illness befell his life when he was entering elementary school. Summer is also like that, when 'filled with a thousand fragilities', a bird's call soaring up will 'push the green sky into the season', signaling the imminent arrival of autumn: 'Filled with a thousand fragilities/ The sound of birds pushes the green sky into the season'.
Not only the sound of echoing birds, but the yellow color is also what makes up the characteristic beauty of autumn. Autumn itself is golden, so wherever yellow is seen, it overwhelms the heavens and earth. Poet Đỗ Trọng Khơi does not describe each specific yellow stroke, he only perceives through two dimensions of space, time in a general, vast manner.
Yellow from sun, rain, from deep within the earth (perhaps manifested through the form of leaves) and yellow from the sky of ancient autumns are also converging to dye. All together form a poetic beauty, not only through landscapes but deeper, autumn has completely captured people's hearts: 'Yellow like self-sun, self-rain/ Self-earth, self-sky dyeing back'.
Autumn yellow has taken over, the green of summer cannot resist, it has withered and 'exhausted'. The intense sunlight of summer now dissolves along with the sound of the 'soul of cicadas' departing from the mortal world. The verses are full of emotions, profound like the lingering heart of the poet: 'Green rises exhausted in summer/ Intense sun follows the path of the departing cicada soul'.
The last two lines describe the sound of autumn leaves in the evening garden swaying. A very lively, vibrant sound, different from the vague, quiet, melancholy sound of autumn in Lưu Trọng Lư's poetry before the August Revolution of 1945: 'The garden in the autumn evening is bustling/ Fluttering leaves nibble on golden moonlight for play'.
Indeed, summer has truly stepped aside to let the autumn soul speak through layers of swaying, bustling autumn leaves. Most interestingly, the image of the last verse appears so beautiful and romantic through the poet's subtle and dreamy view. The gentle breeze, usually formless, without appearance, only chilly when the earth and sky welcome the arrival of autumn shadows.
However, through Đỗ Trọng Khơi's perception, the gentle breeze is 'nibbling' on golden moonlight 'playing' amidst the vast sky filled with golden saturation: Golden moonlight, golden leaves, golden rain, golden sunlight and it seems that the whole ancient world rushes into the bright yellow color. A vast, overwhelming golden autumn painting, enchanting the soul of man.
'Autumn Arrives' by Đỗ Trọng Khơi is a vivid, beautiful picture of nature in the transitional period – from summer to autumn through the emotions and keen observation of the author. With expressive poetic language, rich in sound and color imagery, the poem expresses love for the beautiful, vibrant homeland. A poet 'lying down for a lifetime to write' to have such pure feelings is truly an admirable perseverance, an optimism truly worthy of admiration!
