Question 1 (page 120 Language Arts Grade 11 volume 1)
* The reasoning operations used in the excerpt are: reasoning and comparison.
- Analysis:
+ Main point: Do not be arrogant.
+ Two reasons not to be arrogant are “arrogance is foolish” and “arrogance is backward.”
- Comparative operation:
+ “me or” >< “many others better than me”
+ “large river, vast ocean”>< “small cup, shallow dish”
+ “its generosity is wide and deep” >< “its generosity is narrow and small”
=> Contrasting comparison.
+ “arrogant person… small cup, shallow dish”
=> Similar comparison.
The main reasoning operation used is analysis, and the comparison operation makes the passage vivid, engaging.
* Purpose, effect of using two operations:
+ Make the discussion vivid, specific, easy to understand, more appealing.
+ To live more modestly, to respect others, to learn more.
=> Combining the application of analytical reasoning and comparison is a necessary task, very few cases use only one reasoning operation in an essay. At the same time, we must be flexible in the use of reasoning operations.
