3. Hua Tian Gu
Hua Tian Gu is a Chinese television drama adapted from the novel of the same name by Fresh Guo Guo. The series premiered on June 9, 2015, during the prime time Diamond slot on Hunan TV. Despite airing late at night, the adaptation of Hua Tian Gu quickly gained massive popularity, securing the top spot in the ratings among all other shows airing at the same time across Chinese television networks.
Viewers were initially worried that Hua Tian Gu would have a tragic ending. However, the series delivered a much more uplifting conclusion. After transforming into a love deity and leading Bai Zi Hua to kill her, Hua Tian Gu is saved by Mo Ying, who sacrifices his own life to bring her back. Though Hua Tian Gu loses her memory, she finds happiness with her master. The evil sect, Tian Sat, becomes righteous, and disciples of the Chang Liu Sect gain great fame. The ending seems to offer a complete and perfect resolution. However, this conclusion left many viewers unsatisfied. After so much turmoil and pain between the characters, the last five minutes of the film felt too short to deliver the emotional payoff many had hoped for.

4. I Didn't Have Time to Say I Love You
Premiering in 2010, the on-screen pairing of Chung Han Liang and Li Xiao Nian in the sensational romance "I Didn't Have Time to Say I Love You" based on the novel by Phi Nga Tu Ton, became an instant hit and a tear-jerker that stole the hearts of audiences.
The film tells the story of a tragic love affair between General Bai Lin and the young lady Yuan Ting Yuan during a time of war. A fateful train ride brings these two unlikely lovers together, sparking a beautiful romance amid the chaos of war. While Ting Yuan could have lived in peace if she had married her childhood friend, Jian Zhang, love pulls her toward Bai Lin.
In the original novel's ending, the author lets Ting Yuan leave for America with Xin Chi, a man who had secretly loved her and cared for her throughout the years. Eight years later, they meet Bai Lin again, but due to his overwhelming grief from losing the woman he loved and the anger in his heart, Bai Lin unknowingly kills Ting Yuan's child, not realizing it was his own. Unable to bear the pain any longer, Ting Yuan takes the child's body to him and commits suicide using the very gun Bai Lin had gifted her. However, in the film adaptation, the ending is far more hopeful. After many years apart, Ting Yuan finds Bai Lin, only to discover that he has lost his memory. Over time, he slowly recalls their past, and the two are finally able to be together forever.

5. Heavenly Mountain, Buried Snow
Another adaptation by Phi Nga Tu Ton is "Heavenly Mountain, Buried Snow", which follows the tragic tale of Dong Xue, an orphan raised by her uncle. To protect him, she agrees to become the mistress of the cold and heartless Ma Xie Qing, enduring his cruel treatment. Lieu Kai Wei's portrayal brings depth to the character, showcasing the internal struggle and emotions Ma Xie Qing has for Dong Xue.
The film stays close to the original story, maintaining its sorrowful ending. It is only when Dong Xue is separated from Ma Xie Qing that she realizes the love he had for her. She finds his phone hidden in a suitcase at the airport, with the message, “I love you,” which brings her to tears.
Heavenly Mountain, Buried Snow also sparked controversy with the addition of a second part that deviates from the original plot. Many critics argue that this new segment undermines the character of Ma Xie Qing, transforming him into a completely different person. Regardless, the film left a lasting emotional impact on its audience.

6. So Young
The bestselling novel "Do You Like America?" by Tan Yi Ou was adapted into the film "So Young", which tells the story of a young woman, Zheng Wei (played by Yang Zi Shan), who is determined to enter an architecture school to chase her childhood love, Lin Jing (Han Kang). However, upon arriving in the city, she discovers that Lin Jing is no longer there and has gone to study in the United States. At university, she meets the cold and reserved Chen Xiao Zheng (Zhao You Ding), whom she initially despises. Over time, however, her feelings toward him change unexpectedly. The film, being a long and detailed story, omitted many elements, including the symbolic old locust tree, which plays a significant role in the novel.
In the novel, the author leaves Zheng Wei with her first love, who she has long adored, without allowing her to waver between him and others during her university years. In the movie, however, Zheng Wei doesn’t end up with any man. Instead, she lives freely, unaffected by romantic attachments. While this ending may leave fans feeling regretful, it offers a sense of liberation and avoids causing heartbreak.
