New Year Travel: 6 Ideal Destinations to Celebrate 2017

This year, Times Square (New York, USA) no longer makes the cut for tourists due to its overwhelming crowds, but Lonely Planet recommends 6 exquisite locales for ushering in the New Year 2017, excluding Times Square but including Sydney (Australia).
As a result, Lonely Planet introduces 6 perfect spots to enjoy the dawn of 2017, omitting Times Square but still highlighting Sydney (Australia).
Matera, Italy

Matera is set to become the European Capital of Culture in 2019. However, Angelo Pittro, the commercial and marketing director of Lonely Planet in Italy, advises travelers not to wait until then.
“Welcome the New Year in the city recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site, where there are plenty of outdoor festivals and celebrations,” said Mr. Angelo.
New Orleans, USA

“Every activity in New Orleans carries a unique flavor, including, of course, the moments of welcoming the New Year,” said Ms. Rebecca Warren, editor-in-chief of Lonely Planet magazine in the USA.
Travelers can head to Jackson Square to greet the New Year, enjoy live music, and take photos at St. Louis Cathedral, one of the landmarks with French-inspired architecture.
Melbourne, Australia

In Melbourne, the highlight that every traveler should experience is welcoming the New Year at renowned rooftop bars such as Loop Roof, Naked, or the Rooftop Bar atop Curtin House. Visitors can marvel at the stunning fireworks against the New Year's Eve night sky in the central business district (CBD).
Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

According to Ms. Orla Thomas, editor of Lonely Planet magazine in the UK, the scenery of the historic streets and traditional dishes made from fresh ingredients in Las Palmas will make the New Year's Eve moments of travelers even more complete.
Nassau, Bahamas

“Junkanoo is the largest, most colorful street festival in the Bahamas, held multiple times a year, and one of the grandest occasions is on New Year's,” stated Bailey Johnson, Lonely Planet editor covering Central America and the Caribbean.
“From midnight until morning, beautifully dressed dancers will parade down the streets in groups, marching towards the center to celebrate the New Year with trumpets, drums, and flutes,” he added.
Hangzhou, China

If not fond of festivals, Hangzhou will be an ideal choice to welcome the New Year in a peaceful atmosphere. Travelers can stroll along the lake to admire the mist-covered scenery or climb up the hill to visit a temple.
“Spend the afternoon savoring a few sips of tea, then end the first day of the New Year with an exquisite meal at the Shangri-La hotel located right by the lake,” said Ding Lisong, production and operations director of Lonely Planet's office in Beijing.
Sydney (Australia)

According to Chris Zeiher, business and marketing director of Lonely Planet magazine in the Asia-Pacific region, if in Sydney on New Year's Eve, travelers must visit the harbor area and the iconic Sydney Opera House to witness the fireworks display, regarded as the largest in the world on every New Year's Eve.
Afterwards, travelers can join vibrant music parties, then take a leisurely stroll or drive back to the hotel.
