1. Lipstick Preservation
Lipstick has long been an indispensable item in every girl's handbag. However, it is susceptible to external environmental factors. If you don't know how to store it properly, the lifespan of your lipsticks will be significantly reduced, leading to premature disposal. Therefore, for lipsticks, you should:
- Avoid sharing lipsticks: Girls often share many personal items with each other. However, lipsticks, like face towels or toothbrushes, should be limited as they are directly related to personal health. Many diseases can be transmitted through shared daily items. If you borrow or lend lipsticks, use a lipstick brush or apply the lipstick to your fingertip and avoid direct contact. This is a storage method recommended by makeup artists.
- Avoid direct sunlight: All makeup products are advised to avoid direct sunlight, and lipstick is no exception. Under sunlight, lipstick is prone to oxidation, causing its components to change. This leads to sweating and breakage of lipstick. Therefore, it's recommended to store lipstick in a cool, shaded place for better preservation.
- Avoid places with high heat: High temperatures are the enemies of lipstick. When exposed to high temperatures, lipsticks tend to separate, release oil, sweat, or develop an unpleasant odor. This creates favorable conditions for bacteria to proliferate. It's best to store lipsticks in a cool place with a temperature not exceeding 25°C and avoid hot places like the car trunk, backpack, airplane luggage compartment, or near the laptop cooling pad.
- Avoid storing lipstick in the refrigerator: Many girls have the habit of storing lipstick in the refrigerator on hot days, but this is not recommended. According to makeup artist Ramy Gafni, storing lipsticks in the refrigerator can cause the components to separate and condense, possibly removing moisture from them. Low temperatures may cause the lipstick surface to dry, but the core inside remains soft, making it difficult for the lipstick to return to its original soft and moist state.
- Avoid applying lipstick too forcefully: Some girls tend to use excessive force when applying lipstick to achieve a bold color without having to apply it several times. However, this is not good for the lips. When applying lipstick, do it gently along the lip line to better preserve the lipstick. If your lips are too dry, apply a layer of lip balm first to soften the lips for a smoother and more accurate color application.
- Use lipstick regularly: Regular use of lipstick is also a way to preserve it. If you accidentally neglect a lipstick for 3 months to half a year, it will lose its smoothness and may change its texture. Therefore, use them at least once a week to keep the lipstick in the best condition.
- Close the lid tightly after use: This is a bad habit of many girls. Closing the lipstick cap not only preserves the appearance of the lipstick but also prevents dust and impurities from sticking to it, helping the lipstick remain intact and retain its original fragrance. The lifespan of lipstick will be significantly affected if the owner keeps leaving them exposed to the air.
These are ways to significantly extend the lifespan of your lipstick. Not too difficult, right?

2. Makeup Tools Preservation
Tools like makeup brushes and sponges are often used by girls every day, exposed to a lot of bacteria, so they need some tips to preserve them for durability and extended use.
For makeup brushes:
- Schedule regular brush hygiene: How often should you clean makeup brushes? Weekly, monthly, or every three months? Actually, if you use them every day, you should clean them every day - right after use. Although this is time-consuming and not everyone can do it, try because a clean brush also protects your skin.
- Use warm water for makeup brush hygiene: Using warm water to clean makeup brushes will help remove the remaining powder after each makeup application. However, you should use water at the right temperature, not too hot, which can affect the brush bristles, and not too cold, which cannot clean the brush. After cleaning, blot and let it dry naturally, avoiding actions that cause the bristles to break or lose their natural softness.
- Use a dedicated bag for makeup brushes: Using a dedicated bag for makeup brushes not only helps to better protect the brushes but also avoids the risk of the brush breaking or falling, making it more convenient to use. The fasteners in the bag or the specialized brush box will keep the brush upright and the brush head will retain its softness.
- Pay attention to the lifespan of makeup brushes: Regardless of how much you love a brush, when you see the bristles starting to fray, become dull, or the brush changes color, has an odor, it's time to replace it.
For makeup sponges:
- Schedule regular sponge hygiene: If you often apply makeup, you should wash the sponge every 2-3 days and let it dry. If you only do makeup on occasion, you should still wash it every 2 weeks to keep the sponge ready for use!
- Clean the sponge properly: Each type of sponge has a completely different hygiene method. For water-based makeup sponges, you need to moisten the sponge, then wash it with face cleanser or makeup remover to clean the dirt, then use a soft towel to absorb and dry it in the sun. As for regular makeup sponges, just wash them with a specialized brush cleaner, squeeze them dry, and dry them in the sun. This is one of the basic things that helps the sponge stay ventilated, avoid bacteria, and protect your skin.
- Use a separate container: Various types of sponges often need to be stored in separate containers after each use. This not only helps the sponge avoid dirt but also prevents the sponge from being compressed, reducing the lifespan of the sponge. In addition, you should avoid strong impact on the sponge that can cause it to break or tear.
Makeup sponges are tools that come into direct contact with the skin, so if not cleaned and preserved well, they will affect your skin. Therefore, clean and store them well to ensure the quality of the sponge!

3. Proper Foundation Storage
Foundation is the third step in the perfect 12-step makeup routine. A layer of foundation not only helps cover imperfections on the face but also enhances the overall facial features. Modern foundations are often enriched with continuous moisturizing agents, sun protection ingredients, and skin whitening components.
Foundations are usually divided into two forms: compact and liquid, with a shelf life of only 6-12 months after opening. However, depending on the storage method, different foundations have entirely different shelf lives. Nevertheless, storing foundation properly is not too difficult:
- Avoid direct sunlight: Most cosmetics do not like sunlight because UV rays and light will accelerate their deterioration, and foundation is no exception. Foundation, when exposed to sunlight, is prone to oxidation, causing it to separate or change its structure. If your foundation shows these signs, it's time to say goodbye to it.
- Avoid places with high heat: The car trunk, handbag, and backpack are convenient places, but it's best not to leave foundation there at all. When exposed to high temperatures, foundation can lose color, fragrance, and, over time, deteriorate before the expiration date.
- Store in the refrigerator: In summer, when temperatures are high, liquid foundations are prone to spoilage. Therefore, the best way is to store them in the refrigerator. However, if you choose to store them in the refrigerator, you should dispense a sufficient amount for one week and store it in the cool compartment of the refrigerator. This helps minimize the continuous opening of the product, preventing air and bacteria from entering and reducing the shelf life of the foundation.
- Avoid touching with hands: Many people have the habit of directly using their hands on the makeup they are using. However, this should never be done because it makes the foundation susceptible to bacterial contamination. Therefore, prepare a separate tool for scooping foundation!
With these small tips, are you confident in storing your foundation properly?
