1. The Island was constructed using millions of tons of rock and sand
Instead of concrete slabs, the foundation of The Palm was created using 7 million tons of rock sourced from the nearby Hajar Mountains. Surrounded by desert sand, 120 million cubic meters of sand were dredged from the seabed to form the island. In fact, the amount of rock and sand used for Palm Jumeirah's construction could form a 2-meter-wide wall around the Earth three times. The crescent-shaped breakwater was the first part of The Palm to be built, protecting the island from powerful seawater currents and seasonal winds blowing through the Gulf from Iraq. Over 1-ton rocks were placed on the sandy base, followed by two layers of large boulders. Beneath the breakwater, a layer of sand was covered with geotextile fabric to prevent erosion. The 6-meter-wide walkway along the crescent-shaped breakwater is a popular spot for leisurely sunset walks.
Dredging vessels worked day and night to create the trunk and 17 fronds of the island. Achieving the perfect palm tree shape required exceptional precision, so engineers used the most advanced DGPS technology of the time to ensure the dredging ships sprayed sand into place with pinpoint accuracy. The island, covering an area equivalent to 600 football fields, is four times larger than London's Hyde Park.

2. An Outdoor Marine Life Aquarium
One of the standout features is the Atlantis Resort built on Palm Island, which cost a staggering £800 million. This resort features an outdoor marine aquarium that houses 65,000 fish along with many other marine species. Additionally, there is a dolphin lagoon with over 20 bottlenose dolphins from the Solomon Islands.
According to the Daily Mail, plans to build and develop artificial islands in Dubai have often faced opposition and criticism from environmental activists, who argue that the construction of artificial islands could alter water currents and damage coral reefs in the surrounding seas. Despite concerns raised by analysts, Dubai remains confident that the Palm Islands project is a wise endeavor. The waters around Dubai are home to more than 300 species of fish, including grouper. Typical marine life found off Dubai's coast includes tropical fish, jellyfish, coral, dugongs, dolphins, whales, and sharks. Various species of turtles, such as loggerheads and hawksbill turtles, also inhabit the area.
Currently, the Atlantis Hotel is home to over 65,000 marine creatures and boasts one of the largest outdoor marine habitats in the world. Researchers predict that by 2090, one-third of the marine species in the Arabian Gulf could be wiped out due to rising sea temperatures. With oceans warming faster than expected, the Arabian Gulf is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its naturally warm waters. Since its establishment in 2004, the turtle rehabilitation project has been making significant contributions to marine conservation in the city.

5. A Cluster of Three Artificial Islands
Palm Jumeirah in Dubai is part of the largest cluster of artificial islands in the world. It consists of three islands: Palm Deira, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Jumeirah. These islands are shaped like palm trees and have become one of Dubai's most iconic tourist attractions.
The three islands are Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira. Construction began in 2001, with only Palm Jumeirah being completed by November 2011. The islands were created by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to promote tourism development in Dubai. Each island is designed to resemble a palm tree, surrounded by a crescent-shaped moon-like breakwater, and will feature entertainment centers, residential areas, and more. Located off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf, the islands will add 520 kilometers of coastline to Dubai.
The first two islands will be built using around 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand, with Palm Deira alone requiring 1 million cubic meters. All construction materials are being sourced from the sea. Between the three islands, there will be over 100 luxury hotels, villas, exclusive beach-front apartments, marinas, amusement parks, restaurants, shopping centers, and sports and wellness facilities. Construction of Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001, followed by the announcement of Palm Jebel Ali's construction and land reclamation. In 2004, plans for Palm Deira were revealed, with completion expected within 10 to 15 years.
