It's difficult to definitively say when the best time to visit Fenghuang Ancient Town is because the town offers unique beauty no matter the season. However, if we had to recommend a perfect time, the months from May to November would be ideal for an unforgettable experience in Fenghuang Ancient Town.
- Spring (from early January to late March): During this period, many of the Miao people still follow the traditional lunar calendar for celebrating the New Year. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local festivities and enjoy the springtime atmosphere. The town is blanketed in white flowers, even in chilly temperatures of 10 to 15°C. The clear skies offer a perfect opportunity for sightseeing, photography, and exploration.
- Autumn (from early August to late October): For those with prior visits to Fenghuang, autumn is often considered the most beautiful season to explore. The temperature ranges between 18 to 24°C, making it very comfortable for travel. Additionally, the trees lining the streets start to turn red, creating a romantic and picturesque setting.
- Summer (from April to late July): Summer is peak tourist season, and the town sees a large influx of visitors. The temperatures during this period can be high and humid. 7. How to Apply for a VISA
Getting a VISA to China is quite easy and doesn’t take much effort due to the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. If you’re applying independently, the process usually takes about a week. If you’ve previously traveled to Southeast Asia, your application may be processed more quickly. For first-time applicants, you’ll need to provide proof of employment or a student certificate. The required documents are as follows:

8. Getting There
There are 3 ways to travel from Vietnam to Fenghuang Ancient Town:
- By Air: Currently, there are no direct flights from Vietnam to Fenghuang. However, you can fly to nearby airports such as Zhangjiajie or others with airlines like China Southern Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, or Jetstar Pacific Airlines. A one-way ticket costs between $170 to $200 USD, excluding taxes. You’ll need to make a two-stop flight from Hanoi to Guangzhou, and from Guangzhou to Zhangjiajie. After arriving in Zhangjiajie, you’ll have to take a bus to Fenghuang Ancient Town (this is mandatory, as there are no other options).
- By Train: You can purchase a ticket from Gia Lam Station to Nanning. Then, transfer to another train from Nanning to Cát Thủ (Zhangjiajie). You can choose between hard sleeper beds (215 RMB/person) or soft sleeper beds in a 4-person compartment (315 RMB/person). The journey takes about 15 hours, and you’ll arrive in Zhangjiajie at night. If you take this route, it’s recommended to stay in Zhangjiajie for a day before heading to Fenghuang the following day. From Zhangjiajie, you’ll take a -hour bus ride to Fenghuang, costing about 80 RMB. There are roughly 5 buses daily, so be sure to ask for details at the bus station. Taxis and private minivans are available from the station to the old town, but since it’s just 2 km away with an easy downhill route, you can walk.
- By Bus: You can take a high-quality bus from Hanoi to Huu Nghi Border Gate, which costs 200,000 VND/person and takes about hours. Upon arrival at the border gate, take an electric cart (12,000 VND/person) to complete immigration procedures and present your passport, visa, and entry form. Once you’ve crossed into China, you can either walk 10 minutes to the bus station or take a 20,000 VND electric cart. From there, take two additional buses to reach Zhangjiajie: the first bus takes about hours from the border to Nanning Train Station, and the second train from Nanning to Cát Thủ (Zhangjiajie).
