1. From 16:00 on December 7th to 16:00 on December 8th, there were 14,599 new cases in 58 provinces and cities
The Covid situation in Vietnam remains extremely complex
From 16:00 on December 7th to 16:00 on December 8th, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, there were 14,599 new cases, including 4 imported cases and 14,595 domestic cases. The number of community infections is recorded at 8,322 cases.
Ho Chi Minh City tops the list of Covid infections, while the number of cases in the southwestern provinces remains high
As of now, Ho Chi Minh City has reported over 482,000 infections, with over 18,400 deaths. Additionally, Binh Duong is the second-highest province in terms of Covid cases, with over 285,000 infections. Following closely are provinces such as Soc Trang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Tay Ninh... with no fewer than 700 cases per day (as of 16:00 on December 8th).
The Covid-19 situation in Vietnam
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Vietnam has recorded 1,352,122 cases, ranking 33rd out of 223 countries and territories. In terms of infection rate per 1 million people, Vietnam ranks 149th out of 223 countries and territories (an average of 13,714 infections per million people).
Total number of deaths from Covid-19 in Vietnam so far is 26,930 cases, accounting for 2% of the total infections. The average number of deaths recorded in the past 7 days: 204 cases.
Number of tests conducted from April 27th, 2021 until now: 27,285,221 samples for 70,427,988 individuals.
Total number of recoveries: 1,036,393 cases. The number of critically ill patients currently undergoing treatment is 7,506 cases, including:
- Oxygen therapy via mask: 5,346 cases;
- High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy: 1,194 cases;
- Non-invasive mechanical ventilation: 172 cases;
- Invasive mechanical ventilation: 778 cases;
- ECMO: 16 cases
With the current high number of Covid cases, the Ministry of Health continues to direct and guide localities to vigorously implement epidemic prevention and control measures for the 2021-2022 winter-spring season, focusing on implementing disease prevention and control work in remote areas, areas with difficult access to healthcare services, areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, areas with population mobility, areas with existing outbreaks, and areas with low vaccination rates.

2. Ho Chi Minh City: Starting from 10/12, rollout of the third COVID-19 vaccine dose
On December 8, the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control issued a plan and guidance for administering the COVID-19 booster and recall doses (third dose) in the City. The City will begin administering booster shots to high-risk individuals and recall doses to those who have received the full 2 doses of vaccine after 6 months, starting from December 10, 2021, depending on vaccine supply.
According to this guidance, the booster dose will be administered to individuals aged 18 and older with weakened immune systems, such as organ transplant recipients, cancer patients, HIV-infected individuals, or those currently or previously using immunosuppressive drugs within 6 months... These individuals must receive the final dose of the basic regimen at least 28 days apart. Individuals aged 50 and older are given priority.
For the recall dose, Ho Chi Minh City will administer it to individuals aged 18 and older who have received the final dose (second dose) of the basic regimen or booster dose at least 6 months ago. Priority will be given to individuals with underlying medical conditions; those in need of long-term care at medical facilities; individuals aged 50 and older; those directly involved in testing, caring for, or treating COVID-19 patients; healthcare workers; and frontline epidemic prevention personnel.
Regarding the type of vaccine, if previous doses were of the same vaccine type, the booster and recall doses will be administered using the same type or mRNA vaccine. If different vaccine types were previously administered, the booster and recall doses will be mRNA vaccines. If the basic dose (or booster dose) was Sinopharm vaccine, the recall dose may be administered with the same type or a viral vector vaccine (AstraZeneca vaccine).
The City is ramping up COVID-19 vaccination efforts to ensure that no at-risk individuals are missed. For at-risk individuals who have not yet been vaccinated or have not received sufficient doses, they will be persuaded and promptly guided to the nearest healthcare facility for safe vaccination.
In cases where at-risk individuals cannot travel to vaccination sites, mobile vaccination teams will be organized to administer vaccines at home. For at-risk individuals who have received the full dose, the City will administer recall doses if the last dose was received more than 6 months ago. For individuals with weakened immune systems, booster doses will be administered if they have received the full basic dose at least 28 days apart.

3. COVID-19 Outbreak: Omicron Variant Poses Threat, Ministry of Health Urges Proactive Response
What is the Omicron Variant?
According to some sources, a new variant known as Omicron has recently emerged and is believed to be more infectious than the Delta variant. Health officials are concerned that this variant could spread rapidly globally, surpassing even the Delta variant.
Bambino Gesu Hospital announced on November 27 that Omicron has many spike mutations in the region interacting with human cells. Its contact area is also wider, indicating higher infectivity than Delta. The number of mutations in Omicron is 43, compared to 18 in Delta. With this unusual number of mutations, experts warn that the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be more easily spread or resistant to vaccines and natural immunity.
According to scientists, these changes suggest that the virus may have become better adapted to the human body. However, it is still too early to determine whether these mutations combined truly make the Omicron variant more dangerous than previous variants.
The new Omicron variant was officially named by the World Health Organization (WHO) and classified as a 'variant of concern' on November 26. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) also classified the Omicron variant as a 'variant of concern,' alongside previously detected variants such as Beta, Gamma, and Delta.
The Omicron variant first appeared in South Africa and Botswana and has now been detected in several countries such as Israel, the UK, Italy, and some European countries.
Localities Proactively Develop Response Scenarios to COVID-19 Outbreaks Caused by the Omicron Variant of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus
In response to the complex situation of the new variant, the Ministry of Health has directed localities to proactively develop response scenarios to COVID-19 situations in specific, detailed, feasible, and safe manners, ensuring effective adaptation, flexibility, and control of COVID-19 outbreaks.
Furthermore, the implementation of disease prevention measures such as the 5K recommendations is strongly advised to be carried out more rigorously and closely to prevent the spread of the new variant and contribute to protecting individual and community health.
