1. Ta Xua (Sơn La)
If you want to be one of the first cloud hunters this season, don't miss Ta Xua. Known as the "cloud paradise" of Vietnam, Ta Xua has become increasingly popular among young travelers in recent years. The Ta Xua mountain range forms the natural border between the provinces of Sơn La and Yên Bái. The range consists of three peaks, creating a breathtaking natural wonder. The journey to conquer Ta Xua is not easy, with steep, winding roads leading to the summit. However, the view of clouds and mountains is a true paradise that will not disappoint. When you visit Ta Xua in Sơn La, you’ll also have the chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions of the people here.
On Ta Xua, there are many great spots for cloud hunting: the town of Ta Xua itself, Sim Vang, Hang Dong, and Long Dragon Ridge. For my trip, I chose the Long Dragon Ridge. Situated at an altitude of nearly 1,600 meters, this narrow ridge is suspended in the sky, with sheer cliffs on both sides. The strong winds make walking along the path quite challenging, and you’ll feel the rush of the winds pushing you off balance! The Long Dragon Ridge got its name because it resembles the spine of a giant dragon from a distance. Along the way, you’ll also encounter stunning terraced rice fields, and occasionally, the sound of the Mông people working their fields echoes through the mountains. The region is predominantly inhabited by the Mông ethnic group. Ta Xua is also famous for its tea and the sơn tra fruit (wild apple), so depending on the season, you might get a taste of these local delicacies on your trip.

2. Sapa (Lao Cai)
Many people have never set foot in Lao Cai to experience the ethereal beauty of Sapa. They only get a glimpse of it through photos and videos, leaving them in awe of how such a breathtaking place could exist. But how can one truly capture the soul of nature in a single photo? Visitors can hunt for clouds in Sapa at any time of the year, as each season brings its own indescribable charm. However, spring is perhaps the most beautiful season—when the weather is warm, the sunshine crisp, and the view of this earthly paradise is at its peak. The most stunning cloud-hunting spot is probably Fansipan Peak, known as the Roof of Indochina. However, calling it a "cloud hunt" doesn’t quite fit, as the peak is always covered in clouds. Fansipan is referred to as the "Gateway to Heaven," and visitors don’t need to search for clouds—they are already waiting. Simply setting foot on Fansipan will transport you to a real-world paradise.
Touch the clouds, feel the mist drifting past your face, and watch the sea of clouds gently float by… It’s almost too magical to believe: this place is unreal! The early morning is the perfect time to hunt clouds and witness the sunrise on Fansipan. The sea of clouds flows softly under the cold mountain breeze, carrying away any worries you may have. That breathtaking moment is when the clouds part gently to reveal the majestic landscape of Sapa. From above, the view is so stunning and surreal that it will leave you speechless. The trek to Fansipan also offers an exciting journey where you can see the sea of clouds from different angles, making the experience even more unforgettable.

3. Ta Chi Nhu (Yen Bai)
Known as the rooftop of Yen Bai province, Ta Chi Nhu is located in Xa Ho commune, Tram Tau district, part of the Pù Luông mountain range within the Hoàng Liên Sơn range. Stretching 180 km from northwest to southeast, the Hoàng Liên Sơn range runs between the provinces of Lao Cai, Lai Châu, and extends to the western part of Yen Bai. The highest peaks of the country are found here. Ta Chi Nhu stands at an impressive height of 2,979 meters above sea level, ranking seventh in Vietnam for altitude. It is not an overly difficult mountain to climb. As long as you have basic fitness or are prepared for some physical activity, it’s an accessible challenge. The round trip takes only 18 km over two days and one night. The terrain is mostly safe, with no steep cliffs or treacherous paths, as the route is mainly a trail.
The clouds at Ta Chi Nhu are pure white, drifting lazily through the air, so close you feel you could reach out and touch them. While Ta Chi Nhu is lower than Fansipan, the path to its summit is much more challenging and demanding. The peak of Ta Chi Nhu is often referred to as the “Ocean in the Sky,” making it a perfect location for cloud hunting expeditions. From the summit, you can witness the breathtaking sunrise as it emerges from beneath the sea of clouds. The best time for cloud hunting here is during the dry winter months when there’s little rain. If you get the chance to visit, the enchanting beauty will leave you mesmerized. After a winding and tough trek, reaching the summit offers a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. This is one of the most captivating cloud-hunting spots in the country.

4. Sin Ho (Lai Chau)
The road to Sin Ho is quite challenging, with steep slopes and winding passes. But once you witness the heavenly scenery here, all the exhaustion and difficulties disappear. When adventurers pass through Sin Ho, they often mention the Lang Mo pass. Sin Ho, Lai Chau is an exciting place for cloud hunting, with dozens of kilometers of steep roads, one after another. From above, the winding roads resemble a ribbon, curling around the towering mountain ranges. Along the way, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the floating 'sea of clouds' at the foot of the passes. Sin Ho attracts visitors not only with its dreamy clouds but also with its captivating natural landscapes.
On either side of the road, travelers will encounter numerous waterfalls and clear, cool streams, surrounded by vibrant wild orchids in purple or pure white. In the distance, the mountains are cloaked in ethereal mist, adding to the mysterious beauty of the area. The path to Sin Ho is like a winding ribbon that cuts through dense forests and towering stone peaks. Sin Ho draws visitors in with its floating clouds and the untouched beauty of the highland mountains. This is one of the most popular cloud-hunting spots for young adventurers. Anyone visiting Sin Ho will feel as though they've entered a world that is both real and surreal, surrounded by awe-inspiring nature. Among the clouds, traditional stilt houses appear, with flickering lights in the distance... The misty clouds seem to embrace you, and it feels as though you could wrap your arms around the entire sea of clouds.

5. Ka Lang (Lai Chau)
Ka Lang is a relatively unknown name to many. Located in Muong Te district, Lai Chau province, stepping into Ka Lang feels like entering a mystical world, surrounded by wind, clouds, and lush forests. The clouds here cover vast expanses of land, drifting peacefully before your eyes. Ka Lang is a perfect spot for cloud hunting, a destination every adventurer dreams of conquering. The area is an untouched wilderness of mountains and clouds, and the higher you go, the colder it becomes. You can lose yourself in the mist, blending with the clouds, and forget all your worries. Since few people have discovered this place, Ka Lang still retains its pristine beauty. Once you visit, you'll surely want to return to experience the floating clouds again.
Ka Lang is located over 2,000 meters above sea level. The center of the commune lies on a mountain ridge, so the clouds tend to gather from the valleys on both the eastern and western sides, quickly rushing to cover Ka Lang in the morning. Ka Lang is a place of clouds all year round. Whether in the rainy or dry season, you will always find clouds, though their appearance may vary, from rapid dispersals to lingering for half the day. The most beautiful clouds are seen in November. Summer clouds are also stunning. The most mesmerizing time is after a rainstorm, when the sun breaks through, and by morning, clouds have already risen from the mountain valleys and are racing up to the peak to greet the people of Ka Lang.

6. Moc Chau (Son La)
Moc Chau is a vast and beautiful plateau located in Son La province. Situated along the famous Northwestern route, it offers stunning landscapes, charming villages along the road, and seasonal blooms of mustard flowers, peach blossoms, and plum trees. Known as the most beautiful and expansive plateau in the northern mountainous region of Son La, Moc Chau's cool, crisp air and dense fog create a unique and enchanting atmosphere. The blend of misty mornings and the chill in the air give the natural surroundings a surreal and mesmerizing beauty.
Often referred to as a paradise on Earth, Moc Chau will captivate you with its floating clouds and dreamy landscapes. Almost all year round, clouds swirl through the skies, making it a haven for photographers. With its cool climate, similar to Sapa or Da Lat, mist and clouds are a constant feature here. In fact, the name Moc Chau in ancient Thai means 'the land of mist and clouds.' Whether in the dry or rainy season, in the morning, afternoon, or even at noon, you’ll often encounter valleys filled with mist or mountain ranges and fields covered in a magical fog. The mist wraps around tea plantations and soft green meadows like a delicate silk scarf, turning towering mountains into isolated islands amidst the sea of white clouds. The clouds drift lazily at times, and in a flash, they rush in and out as the wind pushes them away, creating an enchanting, fairy-tale scene.

7. Nui Muoi (Bach Moc Luong Tu)
Bach Moc Luong Tu (or Ki Quan San) is one of the four highest peaks in Vietnam, located between Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces. The Bach Moc Luong Tu mountain range is quite rugged and has long been an attractive destination for travelers in the Northwest. The highest peak reaches approximately 3,046 meters above sea level. The journey from the foot of the mountain to the summit spans around 30 kilometers, passing through diverse terrains such as barren hills, bamboo forests, large woodlands, dwarf bamboo thickets, and rocky cliffs covered in moss. The best time to hike Bach Moc Luong Tu is from late August to April, when the weather is mild—neither too hot nor too cold.
Nui Muoi is part of the Bach Moc Luong Tu range, with an altitude of over 3,000 meters, marking the boundary between Lai Chau and Lao Cai. The trail to the summit is still largely unexplored. The ideal time to visit this mountain is during the winter, when the heavy forest rains subside and the road becomes less slippery. This is a reward for those who conquer their own limits, offering breathtaking views of vast cloud seas and warm, gentle sunlight. The best season for cloud-chasing here is in winter, when the forest rains are gone, and the path to the top is dry and clear. Once you reach Nui Muoi, the feeling of triumph from conquering such a high peak and taking in the majestic natural scenery will fill you with joy. You’ll surely want to return for another adventure.

8. Y Ty (Lao Cai)
Y Ty is a region located in Bat Xat, Lao Cai, known for its mist-covered landscapes year-round. Positioned at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, from September to April, this period is often referred to as Y Ty's 'cloud-chasing' season. It's a popular destination for adventurers seeking the perfect cloud-filled view. The vast sea of white clouds drifting slowly beneath you is an experience that captivates many. These clouds shimmer in the sunlight, creating a stunning contrast with the natural scenery. Coming here, you can leave behind all the stresses of life, becoming one with the misty, mountainous beauty of the region. Since Y Ty is still relatively unknown, it remains a hidden gem for those seeking serenity.
When locals in Bat Xat speak of the difficult journey through A Lu, they often refer to it as the “A Lu Slope – Y Ty Mist.” A Lu, a border commune along the Vietnam-China border, sits on the banks of the Lung Po River, and like many other highland villages, it’s characterized by steep, mountainous terrain that makes travel challenging. However, the area’s natural beauty is awe-inspiring. During harvest season, A Lu looks like a golden painting from above, with fields of rice interspersed with winding rivers. One of the prime spots for cloud-chasing in Y Ty is Ngai Thau, especially when the rice is ripe. The journey from A Lu to Ngai Thau offers one of the most scenic stretches of the Y Ty adventure, especially during the rice harvest season.
