In the academic year 1978-1979, the first Russian language training course was launched at Ho Chi Minh City University of General Sciences within the Faculty of Foreign Languages. In 1988, after separating from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, it became known as the Russian Language Department. By 1996, the department was renamed to Russian Literature Department, a title it holds to this day. The first students of the department, hailing from various provinces and especially from the bustling center of Saigon, eagerly immersed themselves in learning the spoken language of Lenin, the great November Revolution, the language of Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and the gentle and sincere Russian people.
