Long ago, this place was associated with the love story of Hoang Tung and Mai Nuong. The story took place in the 18th century when the hero in fabric Nguyen Hue raised an army to expel the invaders of the Qing Dynasty, and young men everywhere responded, including Hoang Tung. Before parting, the two promised to meet by the sighing lake in spring - when the apricot blossoms would bring news of victory. At home, upon hearing that Hoang Tung had died in battle, Mai Nuong decided to throw herself into the stream to drown. Unfortunately, in the middle of spring, Hoang Tung returned victorious, deeply saddened to learn of his lover's death. Several years later, during the fall of the Tay Son dynasty, Gia Long sought revenge on those who served the Tay Son dynasty. Hoang Tung, in grief, committed suicide by the lake to be reunited with his love among the nine streams. Since then, the lake has been named Whispering, or 'Than Tho' in Vietnamese, until today. That is the answer to the question of why it is called the Whispering Lake.
