1. Dr. Stephen Strange & Christine Palmer
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kicks off the MCU's 2022 big screen journey. The film, directed by Sam Raimi (known for the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series), reunites familiar faces from previous installments, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdam. Additionally, Multiverse of Madness also welcomes new talents like Elizabeth Olsen and Xochitl Gomez.
According to The Direct, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness producer Richie Palmer confirmed that Christine and Stephen have gone their separate ways. However, the Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Stephen Strange still can't forget his former lover.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences can spot Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) - the main character Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) lover - radiant in a wedding dress as she walks down the aisle.
2. Steve Rogers (Captain America) & Peggy Carter
The romantic tale of the '100-year-old virgin hunk' and the beautiful Agent Carter is also one of the most beautiful love stories in the MCU. Steve Rogers, from a scrawny young man, transformed into the symbol of America and later an Avenger. As for Peggy Carter, it didn't matter who Steve was; he always held a special place in her heart.
In Captain America: The First Avenger, the moment Peggy smiled when she saw Captain carrying her photo onto the battlefield is undoubtedly the most beautiful image of this couple. Fans also remember in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, Steve often visited Peggy even though she was old and sick at the time. That shows that despite nearly 70 years passing, their feelings remained unchanged.
For Steve, witnessing his first and true love growing old while he remains unchanged is probably a very painful experience.
In the later film Captain America: Civil War, during a meeting with the Avengers about the Sokovia Accords, Steve received news of Peggy's passing. He immediately left the meeting to attend her funeral, where he also met Peggy's niece, Sharon Carter. Although Sharon has feelings for Steve, and they even shared their first kiss, it's almost certain that the MCU will not develop Steve and Sharon's romantic story as in the original comics.
3. Tony Stark (Iron Man) & Pepper Potts
The duo Tony Stark & Pepper Potts have been together throughout the films from Iron Man (2008) to the most recent, Avengers: Infinity War. The archetype of this couple is just like the proverb we often hear: 'Behind every successful man is a woman.'
Tony Stark is the busy, eccentric inventor of his armor and the world-saving missions. Since Iron Man 2, Pepper has been given full control of Stark Industries. Not only does she manage the entire company for Tony, but Pepper also serves as his strong emotional support in many situations.
In the MCU and even in the comics, Tony has never been the perfect husband/boyfriend material due to his sarcasm and alcohol addiction. However, one thing Marvel fans know for sure is that Tony will do anything for Pepper. For now, after Avengers: Infinity War, Tony is critically injured and adrift on Thanos' planet, Titan, with no clear way back to Earth with Pepper. Surely Marvel fans will want the Tony - Pepper couple to reunite once again.
4. Scott Lang (AntMan) & Hope van Dyne (The Wasp)
Marvel enthusiasts might have overlooked Cassie Lang's daughter once said, 'Maybe Dad needs someone to watch over him,' and perhaps the little girl meant none other than Hope van Dyne - the daughter of renowned scientist Hank Pym.
They met since the first AntMan film when Scott Lang stole the AntMan suit from Hank Pym's laboratory. Hope taught Scott combat skills, quantum knowledge, and how to proficiently use the AntMan suit. Unlike mere 'sidekicks' in the background, Hope van Dyne with The Wasp suit directly engages in combat alongside Scott Lang in every situation.
We all know the original AntMan - The Wasp duo was Hank Pym and his wife. So Marvel fans are eagerly waiting to see if the producers will turn Scott & Hope into a married couple or not? Let's wait for the next installment of AntMan & The Wasp for the answer!
5. Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) & Bruce Banner (The Hulk)
The relationship between Natasha and Bruce leaves many Marvel fans with a sense of regret, as their storyline in Avengers: Infinity War concluded with their breakup. Their fates and pasts represent the mismatched pieces of the MCU puzzle. Bruce can never have a normal love life due to The Hulk residing within him, while Natasha has permanently lost her womanhood due to the ruthless graduation ceremony of the organization that trained her into an assassin. It's these shared pains that truly bonded Bruce and Natasha.
They hastily dated in Avengers: Age of Ultron but quickly parted ways at the end of the film: Bruce transformed into The Hulk and chose to fly into space, leaving Natasha behind even though she pleaded for him to stay.
Since the events of Ultron, they haven't crossed paths again. Bruce was trapped in The Hulk form for 2 years on the planet Sakaar and was eventually rescued by Thor during the Ragnarok event. He continued to clash with Thanos and suffered significant losses. Fortunately, Heimdall sacrificed himself to open the Bifrost bridge and bring him back to Earth. Bruce reunited with the entire Avengers team to fight against Thanos & The Black Order, but it seems that he and Natasha are no longer a couple as they once were.
Deadpool, known for his violence, humor, and crudeness, is also recognized for his deep affection for Vanessa Carlysle. From the moment they met in a bar, they felt an instant connection and developed a sweet yet troubled relationship. However, Wade's cancer diagnosis led him down a path of misguided treatment choices, ultimately transforming him into Deadpool.
As Deadpool, Wade has made countless enemies and crossed paths with numerous criminal organizations and villains. When he and Vanessa decided to start a family and build a life together, Wade's past caught up with him, leading to tragedy. He couldn't die due to his mutant abilities, but he inadvertently caused Vanessa's death. This fueled Deadpool's thirst for revenge, yet he also longed for death so he could reunite with Vanessa. In Deadpool 2, fans witnessed how deeply Wade desired to be reunited with Vanessa.
For Wade, Vanessa represents peace amidst his violence, eccentricity, and sarcasm. He once told Vanessa, 'Your crazy matches my crazy perfectly.' This statement is a testament to Vanessa being the most suitable and perfect match for Wade.
7. Peter Quill & Gamora
Peter Quill and Gamora stand out as the most intriguing couple in the Marvel cinematic universe. Unlike other pairs, their love story unfolds in a unique, piecemeal manner across the films.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1, Gamora initially intended to kill Peter to seize the Orb containing the Power Gem. However, amidst the chaos of the universe, they gradually become closer and start caring for each other as close friends.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Peter and Gamora's relationship deepens, mainly through their synchrony during missions. In Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans witnessed the depth of their love. Despite this, their fate after Infinity War is tragic: Gamora is sacrificed by Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone, while Peter fades into dust. Let's await their return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, scheduled for release in 2020!
8. Steve Rogers (Captain America) & Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier)
Although the romantic story between Steve & Bucky is fictional, Marvel fans passionately embrace it. Fairly speaking, Bucky is the one who fits Steve in every aspect. They have known each other since childhood, fought together in Captain America: The First Avenger, and reunited in The Winter Soldier even though Bucky was transformed and couldn't remember who Steve was.
In Civil War, Steve is determined to save his friend regardless of the Sokovia Accords, despite facing off against the entire Avengers team and the US Government. This leads Marvel fans to humorously speculate: What if there wasn't any 'romantic' involvement with Bucky? Why would Steve risk so much!
In an interview in China, the Russo brothers commented on the relationship between Steve Rogers & Bucky Barnes: “Fans can interpret a relationship however they want. People have evaluated the relationship between Steve & Bucky in every possible way, sparking fascinating debates. We never define a relationship in the film, so fans can interpret it as they wish.” Hence, Marvel fans have more reason to believe in the Cap – Buc romance. If you search for the keywords 'Steve/Bucky' or 'Stucky', you'll immediately find countless results, including adult-themed creations from the online community.
9. Vision & Scarlet Witch
The duo Vision & Scarlet Witch made their debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Vision rescued her from the wreckage in Sokovia. Since then, they have appeared in subsequent Avengers films. Vision & Scarlet Witch had a slight clash in Civil War, with Vision siding with Tony Stark supporting the Sokovia Accords while Scarlet sided with Captain America opposing the Accords. They stood side by side in Infinity War, but the outcome of their romance was tragic.
This is a unique pair in the MCU as both possess superpowers and are considered among the strongest superheroes in the Marvel universe. Vision is a robot created by Ultron using vibranium and possesses a highly complex intelligence: a fusion of Jarvis, Tony, Bruce, Ultron & the Mind Gem. Meanwhile, Scarlet Witch gained her powers from the Mind Gem by agreeing to be experimented on by Baron Strucker. Despite numerous trials and events, this couple always longed for a peaceful life together.
In Infinity War, Vision & Scarlet fled to a distant land to spend time together and cut off contact with the other Avengers. However, they were unexpectedly attacked by Thanos's Black Order to steal the Mind Gem. Both were severely injured and were rescued by the team of Captain America – Black Widow – Falcon. This team, along with Bruce & War Machine, took Vision to Wakanda to remove the Mind Gem and treat him. However, by the end of Infinity War, Scarlet disintegrated, and Vision, although not disintegrated, became non-functional as Thanos removed the Mind Gem from his body.
This couple is sure to return in Avengers 4, as behind-the-scenes images have just been revealed, but how they will return, we will have to wait until the summer of 2019 to find out!
