In an article on the Huffington Post, journalist Marilyn Downing shared her insights on the best things to do when visiting Vietnam.
Vietnam is one of my favorite destinations in Asia because it offers numerous beautiful landmarks, friendly locals, and a unique history. Vietnamese people today no longer harbor resentment towards Americans for past bombings and atrocities. In fact, they are embracing many aspects of American culture such as pop music, cinema, and welcoming us with open arms amidst globalization.

Below is my list of the top 9 things to do when traveling to Vietnam:
1. Embark on an overnight cruise journey across Halong Bay.
Halong Bay is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves the majestic natural landscapes of the world. Here, you can explore caves filled with mystical stalactites or visit floating villages of fishermen near the islands.

Take in the scenery of vast rice fields that have remained unchanged over time, where diligent farmers work on their plots or fishermen cast their nets to catch fish. You can also stop by a local house to watch them make rice paper.
3. Wander through the alleys of the ancient town of Hoi An on a bicycle.
Travelers to Vietnam should take the time to explore the diverse cultural nuances and unique architecture in the most important trading port of Southeast Asia from the 17th to the 19th century.
