II. How to use IDM download software
It can be said that most of us want to download files from the Internet at the highest speed possible. Many people use browser download managers, but that's not the most efficient way to download files.
Downloading files such as videos, software, or drivers through a web browser has never been the fastest. Fortunately, there is no shortage of download software that you can use to expedite this process. You can download any of the options introduced above and proceed to download content as desired at high and stable speeds. But in this article, Mytour will guide you on how to use IDM software.
1. Main window of IDM software
The main window displays a list of downloaded files. This list includes information about the downloaded files such as file size, download status, estimated time to complete the download, current download speed, and download description. You can sort the list by any column by clicking on the column header.
The control buttons, including Add URL, Start/Resume, Stop, Stop All, Delete, Delete All Completed, Options, Scheduler, Tell A Friend, are located on the IDM toolbar. They can be active or disabled depending on the actions that can be performed for the current download selection.
- You can add a new file to download using the Add URL button. You can enter a new URL in the Address field or select a URL from the available list.
If the URL format is valid, the Save As dialog will appear, where you can enter a file description and choose where to save the file. If you want to cancel the download, click the Cancel button.
- If you want to start the download immediately, click the Start/Resume button. Then, a dialog box allowing you to control additional download options will appear. It also displays the download progress, average download speed, estimated time to complete, current download status, whether continued support from the server is obtained, and more...
- Press the Pause button to pause the download or Cancel to stop the download and close the dialog. You can always resume the download at any time. Note that the Resume button restarts the download from the last saved position only if the remote server supports this feature.
- The Stop button halts the download for the selected files. You can also stop the download by clicking the Cancel button in the Download File Info dialog or by closing the dialog. The Stop All button halts the download for all files.
- The Delete button removes the selected files from the download list. It is only activated for completed or paused file download processes. If the download process is incomplete, IDM will prompt for confirmation before deletion.
- The Delete Completed button removes all completed downloads from the list (only available in the registered version).
- The Scheduler button opens the Scheduler dialog, where you can schedule download tasks. The Q column indicates whether the file is in the download queue or not. You can add/delete files from the queue by right-clicking on the file name and selecting Add to Queue and Delete from Queue.
All main controls are also available in the File menu as well as in the Popup menu that appears when right-clicking on a file in the Download List.
2. File Categories
On the left side of the main screen are the download categories. Internet Download Manager allows you to organize and manage your files. If not needed, you can close the Categories window and not select any category while downloading files. You can delete, edit existing categories, or add your own categories.
Right-clicking on a category will display a menu allowing you to add a new category or to edit or delete existing categories.
3. Initiating file downloads with IDM
There are several different ways to download content with IDM as follows:
3.1. IDM automatically captures links
Once the IDM Integration Module extension is installed and activated on your browser, every time you visit a webpage to download a file and click on the download link, IDM will automatically capture the link and display the Download File Info dialog box. Simply click the Start Download button to initiate the download process.
If you click on the Download Later button, the URL will be added to the download list, but the download process will not start. Clicking on the Start Download button will immediately begin downloading the file. IDM allows you to associate your download content with IDM categories. IDM suggests categories and default download folders based on file type. You can edit categories, delete, and add new categories in the main IDM window.
When accessing a webpage to download a video and you play that video, such as a YouTube video, IDM will automatically capture the link and display download options. Simply click Download This Video and choose the download quality from the provided list. Then, click the Start Download button to begin the download.
3.2. Adding download links manually
You can also directly add download links to IDM by opening the software and clicking on the Add URL button, pasting the download link into the Address field, then pressing OK > Start Download.
3.3. IDM integration into the right-click menu in web browsers
When you right-click on a link in the browser, you'll see the option IDM Integration Module > Download with IDM in the menu. You can download a specific link or all links within selected text from an HTML page. This download method is very useful if IDM cannot automatically capture the download link.
For music files or lightweight documents, you can use the web browser for downloading, but for large files or if you want to download multiple files at once, using a download manager is the ideal choice because besides boosting download speeds, it also provides many useful management features, and above are the best download managers on PC that you can confidently use.
