You're copying data from your computer to USB or external hard drive, but the wait time is too long. In the following article snippet, Mytour will share with you some tips to help you back up data to USB and external hard drives as quickly as possible.
Top Tips for Speedy Data Transfer to USB and External Hard Drives
1. Activate Buffer Memory
To speed up data copying, you need to activate buffer memory because this feature has been disabled by Windows. Right-click on the My Computer icon, select Manage, in the window that appears, choose Device Manager --> click on Disk drives --> locate the storage device connected to the computer and double-click on it.
- Note
- When performing the operation to activate buffer memory, before removing the external storage device from the computer, you need to use the Safety Remove Hardware feature to safely disconnect.
2. Format the Storage Device
You perform a USB or external hard drive Format to enhance data transmission efficiency. It's best to Format to NTFS if you're using Windows 7 or later versions.
To Format a USB or external hard drive, simply right-click on the device in My Computer and select Format. The Format dialog box appears, choose NTFS under File system and click Start.
3. Disable Legacy USB Feature
If your computer or laptop supports the Legacy USB feature, it's advisable to disable it immediately as it could be a bottleneck in data backup speed.
Access the BIOS, switch to Disable under the Legacy USB section.
4. Utilize Copy Support Software
Another way to boost data copying speed is by utilizing support from software such as TeraCopy, FastCopy, Power Copy, etc. However, Mytour recommends using TeraCopy to accelerate data copying. This utility is highly efficient and trusted by many users.
