Tor Browser 8.5 for Android is the first stable and official release by the Tor Project on the Google Play Store. Additionally, the app is available through the F-Droid Android software repository maintained by the community.
The development team of Tor Browser for Android released the first Alpha version of the app back in September last year.
According to the release notes for Tor Browser 8.5 for Android:
'We ensure no proxy is left behind, with first-party isolation activated to ensure users are not subject to cross-site tracking, and most fingerprinting protection measures are operational. Although it still lacks some features compared to the desktop app, we will continue to add features and protection measures on Tor Browser for Android in the future that users can find on the desktop platform.'
Android is now included in the list of supported platforms because 'mobile web browsers are increasingly popular in certain regions, countries, and globally. It is the most common solution users use to access the Internet. On the other hand, some users prioritize safe browsing, so we prioritize reaching these users first.'
Additionally, in the release notes, it is explained why the Tor Browser for iOS version is not released on the Apple App Store due to certain principles and restrictions of the tech giant. Instead, the Onion Browser app developed by Mike Tigas and Guardian Project is recommended for the iOS platform.
On May 6th, the Tor Project development team released Tor Browser 8.0.9 for desktop platforms, addressing issues with NoScript and HTTPS-Everywhere being automatically disabled by apps after Mozilla allowed their intermediate certificates to expire.
Two days later, in its Research Grants 2019H1 report, Mozilla stated that 'there's a high likelihood of integrating some Tor features into the Super Private Browsing mode on Firefox browser.'
According to the Tor Project: 'Integrating Tor into Firefox provides users with a more private and secure web browsing experience, especially considering Firefox's large user base. Furthermore, Tor has never been deployed at this scale, and we need to carefully consider and research before Mozilla implements it.'
