In our previous article, we guided users on how to locate a lost iPhone using iCloud, thereby enabling them to track the whereabouts of their devices when lost or misplaced. In this article, we shift our focus to guiding users on remote data erasure for iOS devices in general and specifically for iPhone and iPad.
Data Wipe using Find my iPhone feature
If your device hasn't been synchronized with iTunes and the Find my iPhone feature hasn't been set up, log in to the Find my iPhone website at iCloud.com, then sign in to your iCloud account.
Look at the top section of the screen, click to select the iPhone or iPad device you wish to wipe data from, then click the “Erase” button. This feature allows you to remotely erase all data on your iPhone or iPad. And when you want to restore data to that device, you can use the iCloud backup feature or transfer this data to a new device. This implies that you can set up a new PIN or password.
Data Deletion via Recovery Mode Functionality
If your device lacks Find My iPhone and you've never backed up data from your iPhone or iPad on a PC or Mac, you can utilize the Recovery Mode feature to erase data. To execute this action, you need a computer or Mac with iTunes installed and a cable to connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer.
Firstly, connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer, open the iTunes software. Press and hold the Power/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously to reboot your iPhone or iPad. Keep holding the buttons even when the Apple logo appears. Hold them firmly until you see the screen displaying the Recovery mode feature, including the iTunes logo and the cable image.
iTunes will display the message “There is a problem with the iPhone (or iPad) that requires it to be updated or restored”. Click the “Restore” button to reset your device to its “factory” state as when it was newly manufactured. Then, if your iCloud has been backed up, you can restore the data.
Data Deletion and Restoration via iTunes Backup Feature
If previously, your iPhone or iPad has been synchronized with iTunes on a Mac or any computer, you can fully perform quick backup and restore operations with this backed-up data. The advantage of this feature is that it helps protect all your data safely.
To begin, you need to connect your iPhone or iPad to a computer with iTunes installed. If iTunes asks for a password and you can't enter it correctly, it's best to try another computer. You need to find a computer that you have previously synchronized with your device. If you continue to be prompted for a password on iTunes, unfortunately, you will have to abandon this backup method and try one of the following measures:
If iTunes doesn't ask for a passcode, you can access the device overview screen on iTunes (as shown below) and click the “Back up now” button.
After the backup is complete, click on “Restore iPhone” or “Restore iPad”. At this point, your device will be restored with all the backed-up data. The great thing is that you can change your password while doing this operation because passwords are not considered backed-up data. And don't forget to select “Restore From iTunes backup” when performing the device reset operation.
